What are the first signs of Dutch Elm disease?

This evening I saw an elm (Ulmus glabra) with very dry brown leaves still in situ. It looked like drought had probably killed it but with it being c8m tall I wondered if it had succumbed to Dutch Elm disease.

Secondly I found what I thought to be Elm (U. glabra) but the pedicle was particually long. I have check "Stace" but am none the wiser. Perhaps some of our botanists can help me?

Best Wishes

Hi Colin,

Sounds like DED, but a photo would help if you can manage it (or put a piece on a flatbed scanner).

A longish leaf stalk suggests Ulmus carpinifolia, or its hybrid with U. glabra (U. x hollandica)

Thanks. I cannot find U.carpinifolia in Stace. but is probably the hybrid. So it may be this. I will investigate further in the morning.

I agree with Michael. If the leaf pedicel is quite noticeable, then it almost certainly isn't U. glabra.
I have seen a few tree here affected where a large portion (but not the whole tree) has died prematurely with the withheld leaves turning a rusty brown.
I think most of the trees I have actually seen it on are glabra and are either young trees (15-20 yrs?) or suckers that have perhaps survived and grown on untill the branches are thick enough to be attacked by the bark beetle that introduces it's killer ambrosia vegetable garden!
