Hi all,
I'd like to find a Lowepro Slingshot Type bag that will take my EOS 350D with 170-500mm lens attached. This way I wont miss so many 'shots' trying to get backpack off my back, put down, unzip, remove camera and shoot before bird moves.
I think the new Slingshot 300 is still too small to take this length of lens.
I'd be curious what others do, when walking along birding. (If I have camera out on neck, it bangs against binocs and is easily damaged with branches/brambles/rain etc in most of the areas I seem to be !
Any ideas would be welcome.
Many thanks
Nick

Hi Nick,
I usually wear my gear around my neck or attached to the tripod (I wear my bins across my shoulder, in this way they do not bang against other equipment). For longer walks it stays in my backpack, while wishing not to spot a lifer mocking me from a twig 2 metres away ;)
If you wish to stick with Lowepro (great quality, I have a couple of bags/backpack), why not having a look at the Lowepro Topload Zoom AW? Its interior size is 30cm, while your Sigma zoom is ca. 23 cm long (they say its capacity should be enough for a SLR with 80-200mm f/2.8 lens - most makes - attached). It seems to be easy to fix and comfortable to wear, easy to access and store your gear, and provides a weatherproof cover.
Cheers,
Max

Nick,
When I'm doing walkabout, I sometimes have a 300 mm f2.8 lens with 2 x extender and camera body attached to a monopod, this I sling over my shoulder in the style of the birders who carry their scope fastened to a tripod and who carry it in the same manner.

I use this case, with my sigma 50-500, and it works great and very easy to get the camera out in rush.
