I think it's time now for some real seawatching reports! In Norway the autumn migration is well underway now, and the Norwegian coast is a terriffic place to experience the big wave of birds heading south.

Last weekend (30.-31. aug.) a birding-collegue and I was seawatching on the Norwegian round Slettringen lighthouse (N 64 deg. 40 min., E 8 deg. 19 min.). During the observation period the wind was northerly between light to strong breeze. Not the best wind-direction :-/ westerly winds is preferred!. Below you'll find a list of the observations we made. The number of birds migrating (mainly southwards) are labeled "mig.", all other unlabeled numbers are presumed local birds or birds on foraging-migration.

Bird list:
Red-throated Diver 7 (mig.), Diver sp 1 (mig.), Northern Fulmar 3, Sooty Shearwater 4 (mig.), Northern Gannet 70, Great Cormorant 500 (mig.), Shag 8, Eider 100, Black scoter 3, Velvet Scoter 5, Red-breasted merganser 10 + 3 (mig.), White-tailed Eagle 3,Oystercatcher 5 (mig.), Ringed Plover 2, Calidris/Charadrius sp 25 (mig.), Arctic Skua 1, Long-tailed Skua 5 (mig.), Skua sp 1 (mig.), Kittiwake 75, Great Black-backed Gull 250, Herring Gull 100, Arctic Tern 3, Common Tern 10, Tern sp 70, Black Guillemot 4, Common Guillemot 2, Common Guillemot/Razorbill 3.

Some passerines were trying to cross the sea over to the next island, mainly Meadow Pipits, Reed Buntings, Bramblings and Greenfinches. But also Swallows, Willow warblers and Chiffchaffs set out. Due to wind and some rainshowers most of the passerines returned.

Where's the seawatching reports from you seawatchers out there? I'd certainly like to see observations from your seawatching/pelagic trips in this forum!

And here's a pic from the small fishing-village Titran with Slettringen lighthouse in the background:

Date: Friday 29th August
Location: Point Of Ayre, Isle of Man, north Irish Sea
Weather: Bright and sunny, NNE 6 gusting 7

Birds (of note) seen: Manx Shearwater 50+ heading west.
Completely rubbish!

This might be one of the reasons you haven't seen that many seawatching postings - I know "The Irish Boys" haven't been getting as much as in previous years and it's been the same story off Cornwall......

We live in hope for an improvement.

Hej Prestoy,

Very similar mix to what I've been seeing recently on the Northumberland coast, except there's been a lot of Manx Shearwaters and a few Balearic Shearwaters as well, and a good number of Pomarine Skuas.

But NO White-tailed Eagles (surprise, surprise :-C)

I posted my results earlier here:

and some more stuff here:

Hei Micahel :-)
Sorry - I noticed your reports after I'd posted mine :-/
Not many Manx' shearwaters here these days and Balearics are very sparse, but Sootys seems to be quite easy to spot. A Black-browed Albatross was seen not far north of Slettringen lighthouse some weeks ago - although not by me, regretably (it would have been a lifer!).
Going out to the coast next week and I hope to see more skuas, divers and shearwaters then. But you'll never know whats going to show up - that's the great thing about seawatching!
