Shelducks - ducks, geese or neither? I never seem to find a clear answer in any of the books I've got. Also, are Egyptian geese in the same group as shelducks or are they proper geese (assuming shelducks aren't geese)?
It's a confusing world out there...

I seem to think Shelducks are classified as intermediate between ducks and geese, Tony: and Egyptian Geese are Shelducks!

Hurrah! My vague suspicions were right on both counts.

Both Shelducks and Egyptian Geese are categorized in family Anatidae (the duck/geese family), subfamily Tadorninae (though I can't say for certain that everyone agrees on Egyptian Goose's placement in that subfamily).
