Hi all,
Wonder if anyone can help. I am moving to Pocklington in East Yorkshire next weekend, and wonder if anyone could enlighten me on any good birding sites around the area?
Having just moved from aberystwyth (west wales) - it took me to july to see a coot!- things appear to be looking up!
Cheers
Tim

Hi Tim,
Welcome to the forum!
Had to look up Pocklington on the map, but I see you've got two good sites within 10 miles or so: Wheldrake Ings to the west, and North Cave to the southeast. Both are good wetland sites, North Cave is a series of old gravel pits - saw my first-ever White-winged Black Tern there a few years ago.
Wheldrake Ings:

North Cave:

Further afield, you've got Spurn of course, and Flamboro' Head isn't too far either, while across the Humber near Ousefleet, there's Blacktoft Sands.

Hi Tim,
On behalf of Admin and the Moderators, welcome to Bird Forum :t:
The advice you have been given is all pretty sound. You have some excellent birding locations in the area. I used to be a regular visitor to Pocklington as my brother used to live in a village nearby at North Cliffe. Pocklington itself has Burnby Hall Gardens (http://www.burnbyhallgardens.co.uk/) in the village on it's west side, which whilst known for it's Lilly collection has some lovely ponds and mixed woodland habitats.
North Cave is an excellent venue attracting no end of interesting species. RSPB Blacktoft Sands is pretty close too. though on the south of the Humber. RSPB Fairburn Ings is to the west too by the A1 near Ferrybridge. Geoff has mentioned plenty of areas to the east too. Hornsea Mere on the coast and of course Spurn Point are all reachable for you. You have certainly picked a good area to be moving to for birding.

Hi Tim
I live in Hull and am too just discovering the delights of Yorkshire birdwatching, get yourself this book, Where to watch birds in Yorkshire including the former North Humberside. By John R. Mather, published by Helm and available online at Amazon. Is an excellent guide to what you will see and where to go to see it, happy birding.
