Thanks to Surreybirder for the link (didn't think about that) and Charles Harper for Identification. I really need to get me a book.

Good lord! That's a great shot, Widowmaker! Too good-- I can't see the primaries. It's an Empidonax of course. I think an Alder because of grey back, pale yellowish under, darker breastband, thin but clear eye-ring. Lower mandible suggests Least (which is I guess is your most common Empidonax) but that bird has a stronger eye-ring.

Anyway-- fantastic close-up!

Brilliant--almost indecently so!!!
How on earth did you get it to keep still for 1/14th of a second? (Hypnosis?(

Just in case anyone has a job to find it the URL is

BTW I wouldn't have a clue as to which Epidomix it is.

Thanks for the comments and the information on the bird Charles and Surreybirder. The only way I can explain the shot turning out at 1/14 is that he must have just been very still. I held the shutter and only got three shots off. The first one was the good one and the other two were just blurs of him flying off and the branch moving. I did not realize that I did not have his tail in the shot.

I learned that I definitely need a differenet tripod. Even though this happened rather fast, I think with a good tripod, I could have gotten more shots. It took me a little while to get the bird in frame since Im using a cheapo tripod with the twist handles. The rotation is not smooth at all. You have to tighten down on the rotation knob to keep the head from rocking from slack and then its hard to rotate. I usually overshoot one way then the other.

Thanks for the link. I didn't even think to do that.
