Ghostly Vision
Tuesday 13th March 2007, 16:21
Hello all,

Welcome to the new Ghostly Quiz. You don't need too much skill.

It's really simple - just say what you see. Each picture or set of pictures makes up a bird name. Simply name the birds. All are recorded in the Western Palearctic.

Please pm me with your answers - anyone can take part.

These pics will be up for a week, then no's 4-6 will be posted.

They are so easy!!

Have fun!

PLEASE DO NOT POST ANSWERS ONTO THIS THREAD!

..just thought I'd bump this up to the top.

Only six participants so far - is it too easy? Too silly? Too difficult?

No prizes, just five minutes of fun. Come on down and have a little go....

Great idea for a quiz! I like it

Thanks Oilbird - and for your answers.

No, I don't read any newspapers; I was just thinking one day of how could I make a bird quiz interesting, and came up with illustrating the names with non-bird pictures. It was the same idea as Catchphrase (the TV programme), so I took it from there.

I think perhaps it is because its too easy.

Next time maybe you could do more together (if you can think of enough).

Great idea though.

Is it? Number three, I suppose obvious when you see it, is currently stumping me! Took me a while to get number one too!!! Perhaps this is not my natural sphere ...you'll get my answers when number three clicks ;)

Number 3 is a "kick yourself when you do get it" answer. I know I did,it took me hours to get it yesterday. Stupid thing is, I'd actually seen one on my way in to work that morning! (Hope I've got it right now.)

Yes, I have just done so! I now understand I have some identification problems to sort out ;)

Ghostly Vision
Friday 16th March 2007, 16:30
Just a few extra points here....

BIRD NAMES; I use "English" ones. If a bird in modern vernacular has "Eurasian" or "common" or "Northern", or similar, I am not using that - it would be silly, and I don't like this over-qualification. So apologies to our overseas quizzers for that one. Birds where there used to be a single name use just that. Others where there are more than one species which all have/had more than one-word names are used as such. I'll try and use modern names where possible.

FRUIT IDENTIFICATION: My suggestion to the mods for a Fruit i.d. forum has been rejected on the grounds of immaturity and controversiality. In the meantime I can only apologize if people think no. 3 is a fruit NOT named after a bird (or vice versa)

ONE-PICTURE QUESTIONS: there will be more to come, since you all like them so much!

EASY QUESTIONS: See, it works every time - if you make the quiz really easy at the start, lots of people have a go. We're now up to 23 lucky punters. Most of you have all three of course. They will get a little more abstract and difficult as we go along.

Thanks to all for taking part. Any suggestions for bird names for me to include in future rounds are gratefully received. It won't give you any advantage as there's no prize and I won't necessarily use them all. And you'll still have to work them out.

I hereby attach numbers 4-6. Anyone who has already guessed 1-3 please submit answers to these, anyone else, give me six answers.

Delia - can I have your answer to number 7 at the same time as well, please? ;)

PS APOLOGIES IF NO.6 IS A BF MEMBER!!

...but Stephen, you have not proven so by Pming me your answers.....

It does appear that 3 is the hardest so far, though most people have got it. The single picture clues are always going to be the hardest, as no.6 is also proving.

There are now 30 people having a go - thanks all. Lots of different names are entering, so this is obviously appealing to a different type of quizzer.

Next ones up in a day or two, remember anyone can join in at any time, just answer the ones that have been posted at the time you join in.

Next few are quite easy methinks, but I have some much more subtle ones coming up, so beware, I'm not going to be so literal from no. 13 onwards.

Will conclude this by 3rd April, so keep 'em coming everyone.

...See my forthcoming Catchbirds involving pictures of Richard Scimitar-babbler, Fred Kingfisher, Arthur Great northern diver and Fiona Bruce's Scops owl.

The answers to the last ones of mine will go up here tomorrow (Wednesday).

For future Catchbird setters, might I point out the rules of a pure and acceptable clue:

1. There must be no missing letters in the picture clues
2. Pictures must represent a word or part of a word either fully correctly, or at least phonetically correctly. For example, I wouldn't really accept "lure" for "leur" which is prnounced "lerr" not "lewer".
3. There must be no repeats of parts of words when two pictures are combined (e.g in the Goosander answer, we have goose - sander, which breaks this rule. It should have been Goo-sander or Goose-and-er etc)
4. Pictures must relate directly to the clue given within it; e.g. if we want to depict a lover, we should perhaps use Casanova, or Romeo/Juliet rather than someone who could be a character name, own name, something completely different). Otherwise I think they become too oblique.
5. If you find any of mine that do not conform to any or all of rules 1-4, there are no rules 1-4!

Now we have set the official rules, would anyone else like a quick go? I have been promised by one or two of you that you might.......

I can assure you I won't try to come up with pictures to spell out Brünnich's Guillemot! :eek!:

Hi Adam,

Well of course the two do rhyme, but in my phonetic rendition I was using the root French pronounciation, rather than an Anglicised one.

I'm such a pedant! Or is that peasant?

Didn't realise you were from the U.S.

I'm looking for two American birds (even though the guy is a Czech).

My latest were:

Spectacle...L.E.D...Eidur - Spectacled Eider

Lady...a.m...Hurst...fez...ant - Lady Amhurst's Pheasant

Alright, I know they don't comply with the new rules!

I am now bowing out of the catchbird game with immediate affect! I can't think of any more!

Second one has to be Roadrunner. Can't quite get my head around the first one yet...

But is White-rumped Zatopek on the American list?

Very good Xeno - I am struggling though!!

Sean F - as far as I'm concerned yours are good enough under the rules - only a single missing "S".

Anyway, the answers to the outstanding ones are as follows:

10:Razorbill
11: House Martin
12: White throat-ed needle-tail
13:Pint-ale = Pintail
14:Sooty turn = Sooty tern
15:Egyptian night - jar. Sorry, no points for just Nighjar!! The night was definitely an Egyptian one!
16:Robin (Hood). Given that the film and the Actor were Amrican, A bonus point to anyone who gave American Robin as their answer
17:Cream-coloured corsa = CC courser
18: Dalmatian pelican (Crossing)
19: Stella-cider = Steller's eider. Magnificent, thanks Stephen D.

Rather than attach all the scores I can just say that I reckon six people managed 100% correct answers, with a few more on 17 or 18 out of 19. Most of those that had a go at some, not all, pictures, got most or all correct.

Well done everyone - I've really enjoyed this one.

I'm away for ten days from Tuesday 3rd, so I'll see you all back here after then, probably with some blurred pictures or crops from Kuwait!!

Well done yourself Sean, I've thoroughly enjoyed my venture down to these parts after 2 years as a member and many more as a casual visitor. Enjoy Q8 and don't see too many....

I'll provide you with the answers:
1. (Northern) Cardinal (note the words on the card).
2. (Lesser) Roadrunner (Zatopek, arguably there is no greater (road)runner! Thought of that reasoning after I posted it though... so Greater would be defendable too).
