Which to Go For?

I am a keen photographer using a canon 30d and canon IS zoom lenses.I would like to do some bird photos but find my 70 - 300mm lens is too short for anything outside the garden.my query is which would be best.
1. a 2x canon extender lens
2. a longer zoom lens
3. a scope and compact digital

any advice on what types to buy would be welcome

I would go for No 2, if money is not too much of a problem.
