Having just dropped and broken my Coolpix 4500 whilst birding in the Philippines, I am looking for a new camera and was wondering whether anyone had tried the Canon IXUS 850IS and what their opinion is of it?

I am using a Swarvoski ATS 80HD with the DCA adapter and was wondering on the best approach to attach this to a camera with an external zoom and no filter thread as most new cameras seem to be of this format.

Thanks Mark

I have wondered about the Ixus range in particular the 900. Everything seems to be right in terms of MP, 3x optical, Burst rate, Digic 3 and size of lcd. Af is also said to be fast however it is the settings and it is here perhaps that is the limiting factor compared to Canon's "A" range and Fuji's F30/31.

Go to your local shop and have a good look at them all and weigh up which suits your requirements.

I've been using the Canon 850is for a month or so now and am pretty happy with the results so far, but haven't had many prime shooting days (cloudy, etc). I chose this camera because it is nice and small yet has a lot of features i like. I need to start using a noise reduction software as the images for so small a camera with 8mp are a bit noisy. Personally I haven't noticed all that much benefit from the IS function, I think I'd have much less blurring if I used a shutter release cable adapter. There is an adapter available for these non threaded cameras and the Swaro DCA, i'm thinking of getting one and here is a link to one that is available

So you see that you could use an IXUS/ELF camera with this adapter and a DCA. I'll post later if I end up getting this set up.
