Most of the 10x42s have the same specs, fov is about the same, 6 degrees. There may be differences in brighteness. Nikons, etc are about the same. You are in the right area, look for any model that has good warranty and you like the dealer.

Hello Millertime iv just got a pair of Nikon 8x42 monarchs and am delighted with them. I got them from microglobe.co.uk for £199 whitch is a pretty good price.I would recomend them Thay are bright and crisp the eye cups screw in and out nicely[i were specs]. I would also say follow HenryBs advice and try out a few before you take the plunge. Tero is right about the dealers but dont forget thay may want to sell you the mods that make them the most dosh.
Welcome to the forum. let us know how you get on.

Just a thought. If you later decide to upgrade them, you'll probably find the Nikon Monarchs will fetch much the best part exchange price (and certainly on eBay). In my experience, Pentax are not as popular second-hand.

Sounds like an excellent price - £275.00 on Amazon, who are usually very competitive. A quotation I found:

"Consumer Reports tested these against 8, 10x42mm binoculars ranging in price from $100.00-$1650.00 and chose them as the Jan 2007 Best Buy in the 10 power class."

Sounds excellent - hope you enjoy them and find lots of birds!

Hi Millertime, since you're looking for 8x42, I'm wondering if the 10x42 are difficult to handhold or is it just for an extra set?

Cheers,
Matt

Just a thought to confuse the issue... I had a pair of Avian "F"“s, 8x42, they were absolutely superb. They didn“t have terribly wide FOV but in every other respect they were a great buy.

Take a look at the Bushnell Natureview Roofs - they come in 8x42 and 10x42 flavours for £160 and £170 respectively. Good value for money IMO and lightweight too.
