View Full Version : Long live the King!

Has anyone seen the statement made by Cleyspy that says a new Leica scope is expected at this years Birdfair?
Can anyone in the know verify this rumour?
I am considering purchasing the 77 apo, but will hold out if there is a better option on the horizon, not perhaps in view to buy the new one but more in hope it will bring down the price of the 77 apo.
With a growing array of viable alternatives on the market (Swari 80 HD, Zeiss Diascope, Nikon 82 and the Kowa 883) would it not make sense to play their trump card?
....and if they do bring a successor to the throne what will it have the others have not?

Its been a well known rumour for some time, see other threads. Also like other Leica products, noticably the Trinovid BNs, they carried on producing and selling them alongside the Ultravids. Its only recently that the BNs have been slowly phased out but the price of them has not dropped to a level where they are a giveaway - these optics do cost a fair bit to manufacture and also for any type of retailer to sell! Have a look at the thread for Leica 82....its on the cards but been put back a few times already. You may be in for a long wait, something new always seems to come along......at present the new kid on the block is the KOWA 883 and quite rightly so. As the Alula "independent review" suggests, its more of "Return of the King".
I personally think the title of Long live the King could be on its way to the land of the rising sun.
Oh poo, just seen the result against the Geordies.

I have had a butchers through the 833 recently. Its a truly regal scope but the price tag is a princely sum also. Its about £500 more than I am prepared to pay for something (given my track record) that I will probably drop over a cliff or leave on the roof of my car.
Anyway, why would Cleyspy say this, knowing it could affect sales of the APO 77? It does'nt make sense!
I knew I should have left my avator as it was! Oh well, it makes May 9th
all the more mouthwatering.

I was over there around the middle of 2005 to buy a new tripod. Whilst there I was looking into upsizing my Lieca 62 for the 77. It was suggested that I should hang on as there may be a new 80 on the way. Some wait!

Those Cleyspy chappies are down your neck of the woods, why not pop in and ask were they got the information from and if its reliable?

Hopefully more of the same ... plus lighter and the ability to use 1.25" astronomical eyepieces?

I think you will find that the arrivsal will be coupled witha hefty price increase. Was at Leighton Moss last weekend and noticed in their shop the Swaro 85 was dearer that the new Kowa!!

You dipstick!
Swaro only have an 80 milly scope and it was cheaper by £50 body only. You must have some wires crossed somewhere.

I clocked this a while back, it inspired me to give Leica a bell and find out from the horses mouth! The thread is on the forum somewhere but I don't recollect the title. Anyway, I told them I wanted to purchase both a set of Ultravids and a 77 APO, but was unsure about the scope due to rumours of an impending new model. I asked their advise on the matter and was told that they would not verify such a rumour as this would be 'commercial suicide', but suggested that I just purchase the bins for now.
Reading through the lines and the tone in which he gave this information I was certain of his suggestiveness, and acknowledged his assistance in the matter.
Draw your own conclusions, but if there is to be a new scope then why would it be an 82mm when Kowa has just released their 88mm? Perhaps the waiting game was to 'smoke' Kowa out and then whip out their own 'beast' at the Birdfair.
The Germans like nothing more than pipping everyone to the best place on the beach!!
Personally.... if the New one can find the bird, photo it and print an A3 copy I will be 'well chuffed'.

a. Can it be true that the x32/x26 lens is to be/has been discontinued?
b. Would this suggest a new spec and type of eyepiece for a new scope? (KOWA TSN 770/880 series brought out new lens)
c. Why would they do this as its probably the most popular eyepiece, and yet keep the x20/x16 going.
Lets keep the debate going guys and gals - it has to happen.
Cancel all holidays around Bird Fair 2007!
See you all at the Leica stand, form an orderly queue.

Point c. could just be a matter of still having large stocks, whereas the popular item (a.) has run out?

As long as they dont change the type of eyepiece connecting mechanism (e.g Bayonet to screw)I dont want to have to start buying spare eyepieces just in case. Mind you cant see them doing that with the 62 Televid only being a few years old... Would they?

I think Leica would indeed benefit from making a wider mount that would allow the use of astro-ep's - and give them more freedom to design a new monster zoom. Kowa has always introduced a new ep-mount with their top-of-the-line scopes while preserving compatibility to earlier eyepieces (with an adapter) - so I think this could be doable for Leica too.
