Decided to test my 400mm f5.6 with a old teleplus 2x converter that I have had for about 15 years. All shots were taken on a tripod with manual focus (my eye sight ain't what is was!).
Must say I was suprised at the IQ.

Roy,
Very good results. It must have been a good tele in it's day. Also shows how good this 400mm lens is. Neil.

They're very good, Roy - although the MF would have me knackered.

They are very good, Roy. Agree with Keith though with my eyes, none would have come out.

Wow,

IQ looks fantastic with a 2X TC. I've been a bit put off a TC for my sigma 500 due to having to manual focus but after these I might have to give it a try.

Well done Roy

Cheers

Those look very, very good. My attempts to use a 2X TC with my 400 f/5.6L has not been anywhere near this successful, but MF using 350D's viewfinder is quite challenging...

All look to have excellent sharpness to me.The teleplus was a good converter in its day and looks like it still is.

Hi Keith, not sure if you are aware of it but you can still get focus confirmation even if you are in manual focus mode - or at least you can on my lens, I assume the 100-400 would be the same.

Roy,
I have both the 100-400 and the 400 prime, how do you get focus confirmation?

Hi Lisa, With the 400mm prime flick the lens switch to Manual and then manually focus as normal - When you are roughly near focus depress the shutter button as if auto focusing and slowly continue with the manual focusing as soon as it is 'in focus' the red square will light up and the beeb will occur.

Just tried on the 100-400: it kinda works (in the house anyway) but it seems very hit and miss.

I'll stick to 560mm and AF, I reckon!

Keith, for info all the above shots with the 2x were taken using this method, without this I doubt if my eyesight would have been good enough (I wear glasses for Driving, TV, and reading). Maybe the two lenses differ.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too, Roy.

I like AF, so I don't feel too badly done to..!

Thanks, Roy. Agree with Keith. Think I'll stick to autofocus, don't mind using it a bit.

I will also be using my 1.4 tc and retaining AF. I was never advocating that the 2x tc should be used instead - it is just that I have read so much about a 2x tc degrading the IQ so much that it is worthless. I hope my test shots have proved that this is yet another myth. If ever I need a really light weight 400mm lens I can use the 2x with my 70-200 f4
Just for a bit of fun I think I will try stacking the two converters to give a focal length of 1120mm and a FOV of 1792mm 8-P

Looking forward to seeing your results ...
PS surprising results from this test, well done Roy!
