I'm adding this to encourage responses. This is the camera I'm thinking of getting but am concerned that it has no sensor cleaning (which the 400 has). Do you think they will bring out a version with this facility ? Do you owners of the 30 find dust a problem ?

May I watch this space, it would be interesting to find out if Canon are going to update the 30D, sat on the fence with interest.

I have the 10D, no problem cleaning the sensor providing you use the correct swabs size and follow the instructions provided with some cleaning kits.

Roy.

Thanks Rob.
I know someone with several Canons (all top models) and he paid a lot of money for a special cloth impregnated with anti-static. Apparently he had to get it from America-says he wouldn't use any of the stuff in this country as it leaves the sensor smeared!

Like many others with similar threads, I'm still trying to decide (for many months) whether to go from my trusty EOS 30E film, to the 400D or 30D. Balancing the extra pixel count, compact size and dust system of the 400D with the exposure accuracy, speed, battery life, and ergonomics of the 30D. The 8MP size is my only concern, but I know that images are sharper with less noise.

The 8MP size is my only concern
The difference between 8MP and 10MP isn't as huge as you might imagine. It's only a 10% increase in the number of pixels linearly (30D has 3504 pixels across the image, 400D has 3888).

I bought a 30D last February and it's been my main birding camera ever since. I use it with an EF300 f2.8L, and frequently with the Canon 1.4x or 2x extender. I bought a 5D shortly after its introduction, and use the 5D for virtually everything else, and I like the fact that the bodies are so similar in interface. I find the 5fps excellent for bird shots, and hardly ever use the 3fps setting. I mainly use the centre AF spot and Spot metering, but came unstuck last week when shooting shelducks - their brilliant white feathers led to serious under-exposure. I'll know better next time! (Nowadays, I do find that retaining just sufficient detail in white plumage is probably my biggest challenge.)
