Hi

I have 2 pair of the Swift Ultra Lites and I am having problems with the strap posts coming unscrewed causing them to fall to the ground. I have already returned both pair for warranty work because of this and other problems. Only to have the same problem occur again in a few days. The cost of shipping them back has started me looking for a home repair. Has anyone else fixed this problem themselves and how.

Try a drop of Super Glue on the threads.

Super Glue would be my first choice but Super Glue bonds instantly I don’t think that it would be good to use on something that has to be screwed in if it bonds before its seated fully the glue would be very difficult to remove from the threads possibly causing permanent damage.

I was hoping someone might be able to recommend a slow setting super glue by brand that they have had experience with.

Have you thought about Araldite or similar two part epoxy resin? It would be difficult to remove from the threads if you needed to, but should give sufficient time to complete the repair before it sets and is very strong once fully cured.

I am having problems with the strap posts coming unscrewed. Has anyone else fixed this problem themselves and how.Loctite would be better than Super Glue. It comes in a couple different 'strengths'.

Loctite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loctite) -

Blue Removable No. 242 - Used for things you may want to unscrew with minimal hassle. It cures into a brittle, glassy bond that takes one good twist to break, but removes cleanly after that.

Red High-Strength No. 271 - Used on things that you don't want to take apart for a long time. It requires heat from a torch or iron (to 500° F) to loosen its grip. It cures into a thicker, sticky bond that holds up better against vibration and shocks.

I would recommend against the red LocTite. Blue LocTite is plenty strong for bicycle parts assembly which have parts subject to much more stress and torque than any binocular part ever would.

Other than problems with the strap, how do you like your Swift 10 x 42s?

I would not use Araldite because it is too thick & quite messy. Loctite super glue comes in a variety of specialist forms including thread sealant which is specifically designed to solve the problem of screws working loose.
