Hi Folks
Well,it was nearly the case of " ater the lord mayors show, but the last 2 days really came up trumps for the lads at the obs.
As you will see there was a fair smattering of trans saharan migrants but a few really interesting birds mixed in with them.
The day I was there not much was happening ,1 day the nets were kept close because of strong west winds and on most other days we had good east winds but clear skies at night.
the Totals for new birds were as follows
68 SARDINIAN WARBLERS
18 BLACKBIRDS
11 WILLOW WARBLERS
2 PIED FLYCATCHERS
5 COMMON WHITETHROATS
19 GARDEN WARBLERS
6 BLUE TITS
7 COMMON REDSTARTS
2 SPOTTED FLYCATCHERS
20 BLACKCAPS
1 SUBALPINE WARBLER
2 NIGHTINGALES
1 BEE EATER
4 WREN
4 REED WARBLERS
1 SPARROWHAWK
2 ORPHEAN WARBLERS
4 IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFFS
1 COMMON CHIFFCHAFF
1 TURTLE DOVE
1 GREENFINCH
1 ROBIN
2 GREAT TIT
2 RED NECKED NIGHTJARS
1 LESSER WHITETHROAT
RETRAPS were as follows
28 SARDINIAN WARBLERS
4 BLACKBIRDS
2 BLUE TITS
3 BLACKCAPS
1 WREN
We trap very few raptors on the rock as most as passing over too high but the odd Sparrowhawk is the usual what we get or sometimes a passing Kestrel
That should be the last of the Iberian Chiffchaffs, and we have the first Autumnal Robin.Finch numbers will soon start to build up and their peak passage is Oct.and Nov.
And yet another Bee Eater, and by the numbers that we had through it was no more than was deserved!!!!
2 Red Necked Nightjars were dazzled on the roads just up from the obs.,the first of the Autumn, their sightings have been well down on the rock this year.,but the bird of all birds was the Lesser Whitethroat.,I wonder if it was "raced".
This was a first for the Rock and when we get the photos back from 1 of the ringers will post it to the site, not such an exciting bird for you UK lot,but down here very special!!!!
More UK ringers arrived on Sunday.,and with wind going back to strong west it does not bode well for them at the moment!!!
