Unfortunately the numbers have diminished and today there have been only 2 or 3 seen in the area.....now at Saul Warth, Frampton-on-Severn.
Magnificent birds and feeding voraciously last week when I made 2 visits to see them. In no way could these wonderful birds be described as "crap"....I presume the gentleman who named them thus was pulling our legs.......otherwise why should he describe himself as a birdwatcher?

Apologies. I had just read the thread "9 Glossy Ibises at Slimbridge" and was quoting a comment from Fri 20th April. I hadn't realised that this was a different thread. But please read the comments for yourself!

Oops, i didnt realise someone else had already posted, ijust thought it was big news and jumped in(well, it still is big news even if youre not a twitcher!)

I read through that post and to be honest I think some people are just wind up merchants that make comments like that just to get attention.
I dont see the point of twitchers just like I dont see the point of trainspotters(or bus spotters for that matter)
Birds arent just numbers, statistics, theyre two legged winged wonders of nature, and if I had the money, time and free time i'd be there like a shot.

Seeing all those ibises together was just such a brilliant sight....and they were only my 3rd rarities in the UK.All the birdwatchers we came across on the two visits couldn't have been more helpful. They shared information (and telescopes) and there was a real feeling of friendliness. I enjoyed this almost as much as seeing these wonderful birds!

Can anyone hazard a guess where all these glossy ibises have flown to now that there are none left in Frampton-on-Severn? Would they head north or south, apart from obviously heading for new feeding grounds, and how come there have been no subsequent sightings? They cannot just disappear into thin air!!

Actually, I think I may be able to answer my own question!!!! I saw on Bird Guides last night that c. 9 Glossy Ibises had been seen in Dorset, by the coast, heading west. So will have to look today to see if any more make an appearance.

It has been in the area since October 2006, so may well linger for some considerable time yet.

So...not very alliterative, then! I must have misread the BG text!(But it is close....geographically???)

Stephen Dunstan
Friday 13th July 2007, 00:07
(But it is close....geographically???)

Yes, true enough. However Steven Menzie, Pelican Crossing and SiG may disagree as it comes under Merseyside and Preston is unequivocally Lancs.

Regards,

Stephen.

OK.....then to be alliterative you'd have to emphasise the "P" in Southport.
I am not familiar with the area in detail, but, having had children, have of course been to Blackpool(Golden Mile)! Apologies for errors in exact location.

BG don't have Merseyside available as a county in their submit sighting form, Lancs is the best choice ...

Glad to hear you are enjoying it, nb - lovely birds to see - found an adult locally a few months back but it only hung around a few days.

Point taken....not very appropriate here, is it? Just didn't expect thread to last so long.I'll finish it now as bird could remain at Polly's Pool for ages yet. You must admit, though, that the original 17 were magnificent birds, and at the point the thread was started it really was good, live news from round the world! I suppose it's too late in the year to have a fresh influx??

If it hangs around as long as that Bowling Green Marsh bird in Devon then you might well have had to post every day for several more years!
