Crickey, this is hard,

2 looks like it is a raptor with those wings and tail, guessing Sparrowhawk or a falcon
3 looks a long winged sea bird of some sort, white underneath, guessing Shearwater or a Meganser with wing extentions.

nick patel
Tuesday 15th May 2007, 22:29
Sorry pe'rigin, none of those.

Hi, sorry for the poor images. Doesn't it make it more of a challenge though, otherwise it would be too easy.

Anyway the image is of a Swift (see pic), well done Nick Derry as it was a hard one .

Nick.

nickderry
Saturday 19th May 2007, 23:09

What do you think of the second picture? This one might be very hard or not(?)

Nick.

This next one, must be one of the hardest so far, and I'm not gonna enlarge the image at all, until at least a few guesses are given.

Nick.

Odd clue: If i told you where the picture of the bird was taken, and when, it would probably (for most) give away the identity of the bird.

nick patel
Wednesday 30th May 2007, 12:23
That is correct it is a type of Flatworm, in fact it is actually called a planarian worm, dugesia lugubris.

Nick.

nickderry
Wednesday 30th May 2007, 12:35
Not flatworms but this picture reminds me, when I was a kid, I decided to get some pet leeches from our local brook (permenant drain overflow) using a scrap of meat tied to some string. I took them home and set the up in an old aquarium where they looked very happy indeed. I didn't realise that leeches crossed land until that night when my Mom woke me up screaming in terror as she stepped on one barefoot. I was distraught for the poor leech.

I'm pretty sure, as there are two pairs that visit altogether, and each have distinctive features about them, like a few feathers missing on one's head, or something like that, so i'm pretty sure it's only these two pairs. But i could be wrong?

hybrid greylag with emperor/bar-headed?

nick patel
Monday 18th June 2007, 21:37
Well it was with 100+ Canada geese, so i assumed it was just an albino Canada goose. But as you say, Nick Derry, emperor/bar-headed?, this kind of makes sense with the grey markings on it's back, as within the canada geese, was funnily enough, a Bar headed goose. To see more pics of the geese, including the Bar headed goose at Brockholes quarry, yesterday, visit my blog to see the goose and more:

http://nickswildlifeblog.blogspot.com/

So, i'm gonna have to leave you lot to decide which goose or hybrid it is.

Thanks.

It isn't a Roller or a Kingfisher. Sorry for any confusion, but the bird has not been removed from the picture - it's in there somewhere.

Correct Nick Derry!
Didn't think you'd get it that quick. (taken at Leighton moss, whilst viewing the WTP!)

nickderry
Wednesday 20th June 2007, 13:48
I wouldn't have got it quickly if it wasn't for the habitat, I was going to go for R L Buzzard first (dark belly patches in all the blur), then realised it looks a little summery!

No need to laugh - The one bathing is a Common sandpiper - Correct!

The flying one isn't a juvenile starling though.

Friday 29th June 2007, 12:35
sand martin for the other maybe?

nick patel

Friday 29th June 2007, 20:56
Mallard ??

nickderry
Friday 29th June 2007, 21:23
if it's not the mallard, the only other thing in the pic is water! Unless that's a bird's tail in the top left hand corner.

nick patel
Friday 29th June 2007, 22:23
You are correct Nick Derry, and i suppose it would be too unfair to ask you what bird it was - It was a Sand martin. I should have said, find where the second bird was, instead of, what was it.

Oh well, on to the next one - Yes, there are Canada geese in there, but who else is hiding? Any Fylde birders cannot take part in this one, as I'm sure they know what the Bird is.

I'm know I'm going mad when I see a coal tit staring at me from the grass!

nick patel
