Hi all,
Does anybody know where I might find a copy of Svensson's Identification Guide to European Passerines? Either new or second-hand?
I know this book is out of print, and the new edition is only coming out next summer, but I really would like to get hold of a copy before then. I've searched through numerous web book sites and also Ebay, but no luck so far.
Does anybody have a copy they no longer use, and could maybe sell to me?

It's a bit expensive from nhbs but should be in stock.

Hi Wizard,
I've tried the NHBS site as Dave G recommended, but am still waiting to receive it. The Subbuteo website had it listed, but then let me know within a day or so that they didn't actually have it in stock. NHBS have promised 2-3 weeks for delivery to me. So I'm waiting to see what happens.
I'm holding thumbs, and will let you know if I'm successful.

Hi John,
Thanks very much for the offer. Unfortunately it's the whole book that I need, as I'm about to start training as a ringer. Hopefully the NHBS will be able to deliver.
Thanks again, Karen

Well, the NHBS have been unable to deliver. I phoned yesterday to query the progress on my order, and they said that they were waiting for the new edition to come out (June 2004) before they were going to fulfill my order. Funny that! :h?:
If anybody has a second hand copy out there, that they wouldn't mind passing on, then please, please let me know.

Karen,
I gave a copy of this to the bookshop at Portland Bird Observatory a couple of months or so ago. I expect that they have sold it since it is in great demand. Their website is at
http://www.portlandbirdobs.btinternet.co.uk/books_secondhand.htm
Give them a call and see if they still have one and/or ask them to let you know if they get another copy in.
Second suggestion - have you tried the bookshops in Hay on Wye. There is an natural history bookshop called Arden which has lots of ornithological books. You should find them with a search engine. They might have it or reserve it for you if they get one.

Karen,
There seems to be a glitch in the number of posts people are making and it may be that no one has officially welcomed you to BirdForum. Let me put that right straight away.
On behalf of all of the Moderators and Admin, welcome to BirdForum. I am sure you will find lots of information from a very friendly and widely knowledgeable membership. Good luck with the search for the book and the ringing training.

mmmmmm, one to avoid in the future if they play that sort of game. I hope they didn't charge you first, did they?
Good luck in your hunt, if I find somewhere with a copy I will give you a shout.

No, no, I think that was just a glitch in the way the NHBS computer systems handled my order. I guess it's what happens when you go for anonymous internet style service. The people element simply hadn't picked up on the lack of stock. They were very apologetic on the phone...
Subbuteo's mail order service was much better though - at least they responded within a day that they wouldn't be able to fulfill the order.

Karen:
It's been a while since the last post on this thread, but if you still need the book, you might try another one of those anonymous sources: Amazon.
Amazon UK lists it, but says it might only be available used. I think it might be worth, giving it a try. I have only used Amazon US, and I have been able to obtain books through them that seemed out of reach. The book you need is not listed on Amazon US, only on UK. There is never a guarantee on the used book market, of course. Good luck!

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the info - it wasn't available on Amazon when I first looked - I guess these books come and go quickly on the second hand market.
At any rate, I've decided to wiat for the new edition to come out in mid-2004 instead. The months pass by so quickly, and meanwhile I just refer to my trainer's guide instead. That is working out OK.
Many thanks for the info though.
