Kaysburn Plantations Winter roost
These coniferous plantations centred on Coal park Gill ( NZ 215465 ) are the winter roost site to mixed corvid flocks in winter.
These private woods are to the north of the A1691 Durham -Consett road, at Kaysburn, Langley Park.
Up to 20,000 birds have been estimated, wheeling over the woods on clear windy nights.
(The general area has fair populations of Little & Tawny owls, together with Long eareds, Woodcocks, Sparrowhawk, Herons etc
During the season the area has Quail, Yellow wagtail, Redstart, along with Corn bunting, Dipper, Kingfisher, Grey wagtail, Tree Sparrow, Nuthatch, etc
Hobby & Buzzard have both been noted.)
The corvid roost is spectacular on a clear windy night.
