I'm upgrading from a Canon 20D with a 17-85mm IS lens to a Canon 1d MkIII and wonder which "utility" lens I should get. I have long focal length lenses for bird photography and would use the "utility" lens, probably a zoom, for landscape, portrait, family, etc. Any recommendations?

Given the exceptional high ISO performance of the MkIII, EF 24-105 f/4L IS is probably your best bet. It is smaller, lighter and cheaper than the 24-70 f/2.8L and has a wider zoom range.
