I am looking for recommendations for sturdy porros that can take a bit of abuse when handled by unmotivated students. Our experience is that those rubber eyecups tend to get lost. So any model would be of interest that has adjustable eyecups which don't need to be folded or removed for eyeglass wearers. I think 8x30 would be optimal from the point of view of performance and cost, but any other types are also of interest including reverse porros. No roofs, though.

Hello!
8x30 Porros are a real problem. I like them, but hardly any company makes this format anymore.
Roofs will be able to withstand abuse by neglect better.
Pentax have some sturdy, affordable, compact reverse porros that are water-proof.
See: www.pentax.de if interested.
The optical quality of Pentax binos is usually quite good, not like SLZ but second to none of the rest.

Leupold's Yosemite's. You can get them in 6 x 30 porro's or 8 x 30. They are very rugged with rubber armoring and cost between $90.00 and $130.00 US funds. They are designed as a family binocular and arguably are the finest budget binoculars made today. They have hard adjustable twist eyecups and wide fields of view. They are sharp and bright and their IPD can be adjusted to fit a child's eyes. You can look at them at www.eagleoptics.com under Leupold.

Thank you all for your most helpful replies. I'll look into the various suggested models and how to best get them here! For now, the light-weight Leupold's lead my list. But I'd have to have them sent from the US, I assume.

My batch of six Leopold Yosemite 6x30s arrived today, shipped air mail from the US; and I am very impressed. I have written about the observed sample variation in the Leupold thread under the 6x30 heading. Thus, I don't want to be repetitious here. However, I would like to thank again for the help and in particular ceasar (Bob) for leading me towards the Leupold Yosemite 6x30. These are not known here in Switzerland, thus I would have missed them had it not been for BF and its many fine people! (I did check the Leupold thread afterwards to see what others had to say.) :t: :t: :t:
