The Devil Bird

This idea recently came to me, I like the idea because it is not necessarily about how many birds you have seen, it is about the rareness of the birds you have seen and how the rareness and value of all your birds adds up to a total score.
I don't know if anyone is interested in this 'game' but please post and say whether you would like me to post the pointing system I have made up or not because I cn't be bothered doing it now when people may not even think it is a good idea so let me know.

It basically works like this:

If people like the idea I will post the British List with a pointing system on it
Next to each bird, it says how many points it is worth, the rarer the bird is the more points it has and if you have seen that bird you add it to your total
For example here would be the first section of the game:
Mute Swan Cygnus olor AC2 10p
Tundra Swan Cygnus columbianus A 30p
Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus A 25p
Bean Goose Anser fabalis A 30p
Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus A 25p
Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons A 20p
Lesser White-fronted Goose* Anser erythropus A 35p
Greylag Goose Anser anser AC2C4 15p
Snow Goose Anser caerulescens AC2 35p
Greater Canada Goose Branta canadensis C1 10p
Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis AC2 25p
Brent Goose Branta bernicla A 25p
Red-breasted Goose* Branta ruficollis A 35pFor example I have seen from that; Mute, Tundra and Whooper Swans, Pink-footed, Great White-fronted, Greylag, Greater Canada, Barnacle and Brent Geese. So I add the points next to those birds up to give me a total of 180 points- in the full thing I would do the whole British List.

10p= Really common
15p=Common
20p=Fairly Common
25p=Uncommon
30p=Localized
35p=Scarce
40p=Minor Raritee
50p=Vagrant
60p=Smaller National Raritee
70p=National Raritee
80p=Mega
90p=Super Mega (only recorded two to 20 times in Britain before)
100p=First for Britain
So basically, if the idea is popular, I will post the British List with each bird having a number of points next to it. For each bird you have seen in Britain, in your life you add the points to all the other points you have from the other birds you have seen in Britain and add together your total, you post your total and have a nice bit of competative birding whilst seeing out of interest the value of the birds on some peoples lists. Don't be scared to join in even if you don't think you have seen many rare birds!

Because I have explained this really badly and over alot of text it looks complicated but it is actually simple. Ask me if you have questions about it and please tell me if this is a good idea or a waist of my time typing all these rubbish, long winded explanations out ;).
Thanks, David

Would anyone want to do this game, is it a good idea? If you think it is then I will post the whole thing.

Hi David
Sounds a good game, and I would like to see your full list posted here.
If I have seen two Greylags does that count more than one Pinkie? Only joking!!!

Hi
Great you like the idea. The list is still a work in progress and is about half done. I will post it tommorrow or the next day.

I think my total is a neat 600 out of 2085, pretty pathetic, but alright for me. That is the equivilent of 6 first for Britains. I am trying to work out the percentage.

Actually mine is 640, about 31%.
Please play the game people. The aim of it is to show the value of peoples list not how many people have on them.

Sunday 3rd June 2007, 03:19
As a matter of fact, in the US here, the ABA has codes for each species. 1's dirt common, 2's localized breeders, 3's casual and regular strays, 4's the really rare vagrants, 5's accident, and 6 extinct. Add 'em up, and there you go.

hi birder bf. If you have been to ireland then I think it counts if its northern ireland. Steve is pretty far ahead, surprise surpirse :).
Score:
1 Steve Lister:88%
2 Delia Todd:42%
3 Me (the devil bird): 31%
I counted Ruddy Shelduck too steve. You can count every bird which appears on the list.

A scientific calculator may be useful ;)

Hi Miedin. Shame you can't play, but I may do a rule change today, which I will work out in a few minutes after this post. I determine the scores -
A: for commoner species; with my own opinion and experience B: Rarer Birds; from birdguides online guide to rarer british birds where I find out how many times a bird has been recorded in britain like a 100 would be if it has only occured once and a 90 would be if it has occured between 2 and twenty times.
A great idea! It's too bad I can't play along but I am very interested. Where do you get the information to determine the rareness of each bird?

The Devil Bird
Monday 4th June 2007, 17:00
Change: There are now three categories:
Category 1 (most people will be playing this): Any of the birds on the list that you have seen in Britain (excluding Republic of Ireland)
Category 2: (For Birderbf and anyone else who has only been in the Republic of Ireland)Any of the birds on the list that you have seen in the Reublic of Ireland only
Category 3: Birds on the list seen in a different country (if they occur there) these players may get a boost because birds that are rare here may be dead common there, but it will be interesting to see how much they get.

The Devil Bird
Monday 4th June 2007, 17:25
Now the current scores (part 2 is worth a big 2885 points and in total so far there are 4970 points at stake!) (not too late too take part in both categories anyone else):
Category A:
1st: Steve Lister with 3320 (66%)
2nd: Delia Todd with 1415 (28%)
3rd: The Devil Bird (me) with 1055 (21%)
4th: Clare78 with 455 (9%)
Category 2:
1st: birderbf with 55 (1%) (what is your total for the first part birderbf?)
Category 3:
1st: Ody with 390 points (8%) (is that from a trip to Britain or from Europe? let me know your total for the second part)

The third part will be posted between 7pm and 8:30pm (London time GMT+1)

The Devil Bird
Monday 4th June 2007, 17:35
People who played part 2 I made a mistake Green Heron is actually worth 90 points not 20 (which is equal to fairly common!) So take away 20 and add 90 (or just add 70) to your list if you have seen Green Heron. Also Green Heron has been upgraded to 50 so if you have seen one add ten or take away 40 and add ten.

Hi connor, welcome to the game. I will update the scores in a sec. I'm not sure I have got every ones scores from part 4 so will leave part 5 for a little while. Its good you didn't count any from abroad, remember if you are in Category a of the game (most of you) you can only include birds you have seen in britain. Same applies to category b but you can only count birds you have seen in the republic of ireland.

Sorry I haven't been on for a couple of days, here are the current scores. Steve; what is an example of the points that don't seem right?

Arctic and Pomarine Skuas both the same - Pom should be more, as should Long-tailed.

Wilson's Phalarope - worth more than 60, suggest 80.

Generally about right though. Not many 10 points birds yet, and Stock Dove should not be one of them.

Hi steve, I can see your point with the stock dove, I think I meant to put stock dove as the 20 and woodpigeon as the 10, oh well. It will be too much trouble changing peoples scores so I will leave this one be, it won't make a big difference at all.

Hi Falco Peregrinus, you can play in category 3 if you want because I think the US has a few birds over there that you get here (see post 20).

If you are in the republic of ireland you can play in category 2.

I will try to put the next section on tonight.

Hi on-firecrest-welcome to the game, I have added you to the scoreboards. I don't know what the top score for a young birder is, I think it is me and birderbf that are younger- are you as well? Unfortunately those fussy BBRC and BOURC people will only say that black-eared kite is the same as a black kite I'm afraid! I was also thinking of doing a year list version but not at the same time as the full version, I will probably do it when this one has finished which will be in the next week or so. I will post part 6 out of ten tonight. There are 14,115 points available. I haven't missed anyone out on the scores have I?

The 6th Part will be on in about 10-15 minutes. Steve- I have changed most of the scores that you suggested but I am only upping Wilson's Phalarope to 70 however this will not apply to this version of the game-I can't muck everyone's scores around now so when I do the 2007 Year List Points version of the game (coming soon) then they will be changed.

Hi. Unfortunately I can't give you that bonus ;) . I will give the year list version a go and if it turns out alright for 2007 then I wil do it again next year- it will be far easier than this one because I am still writing the points, perhaps I should do it all in one night then I wouldn't have to type the points up every couple of nights. Once this one is finished then I will have the whole thing saved on my computer.

The year list one that birdwatch did was quite simple. Birds were created in three catagories, Common= 3points, Scarce =6points and Rare=10points. Extra points could be added if the bird was seen in your nominated county or/and if you found it yourself. If i remember, it was 1 extra point if it was in your county and 10pnts if you found a rarity yourself.

Well, I had to think about this. But unfortunatley I have decided that because some people don't count what they hear on their life lists it would be unfair if you counted one you heard whereas other people didn't count it, then you would gain points. So for now on please don't count birds you have only heard. Sorry!

Hi there. As Teamsant said, Red Breasted Goose is worth more than I originally said. So, if you have seen red-breasted goose please add 25 points to your score. I may post the next part in a minute seeing that most people have their scores up to date.
Now, so that their is some notice. I am going to do a 2007 year list version of the game. To reduce the number of late starters for the 07 version please would you let me know in advance if you would like to take part in it by either PMing me or posting here. You don't have to but I think it would reuce the number of people starting later on in the game (then they wouldn't have to add up about 7 parts in one chunk.

they have not had many species, although arctic warbler is a fairly regular species for alaska i believe. And they've also had dusky, lanceolated, middendorff's grasshopper and yellow browed on the pacific side and willow, wood and lesser whitethroat on the Atlantic side. It's all to do with the prevailing winds. Red eyed vireo is annual here, and Ireland have had a couple more species than us.

It is interesting about the warblers, unfortunate we don't share our warblers with them.

i'm now on 4190

they have not had many species, although arctic warbler is a fairly regular species for alaska i believe.

And all these years I thought our birds just were horrible with directions...:-O

Hi! Can I join? I'm an aussie, but I spent two months in the UK over christmas 2005/6...only counting that trip, my current score is 3220. Thanks!

Does that makes me the person that had the least amount of time to gather birds within category A?

I guess I'm in catagory three. Birding from the US.

I had as follows:
1- 615
2- 665
3- 585
4- 410
5- 445
6- 885
7- 740
8- 115
9- 630
10- 910

With a total of 6000

Nice to see my sweet little mourning doves get such a high score. They wake me every morning.
This was fun, interesting to see some birds that I consider so common to be considered so special and uncommon somewhere else. Had to laugh when I got to laughing gull. If you want to see them you have to go to South Jersey. In the summer they are everywhere.

OK, I finally updated my scores... I count "heard-only" birds, but I don't count category C birds (nor the released Red Kite I saw near Oxford), so I guess that evens out.
For the Netherlands (Cat 3), it would be 14330 (I would have even more points if some birds like vultures would have occurred in the UK...).
In the UK (Cat 1), it's 3180 as yet... but there's a lot of room for improval (without twitching), and I may have seen a few birds more (I must have seen Willow Warbler!)
