Hi guys,

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to SLR photography, but bought a Rebel Xt and a budget Canon non USM basic 75-300mm lens.

Today my Kenko 1.4 PRO 300 DG arrived, and all I'm getting when I attached it and tested it are " Err 01" messages on the camera. Of course auto-focus refuses to work too , and once I fire off one shot, the camera no longer operates .

The lens I tested it on is brand new . I'm now wondering if it's just not compatable with this lens. I took the TC off and tried the lens on it's own on the camera and it's fine, but with the TC nothing.

Does anyone know if the Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM or 75-300mm IS lenses work with the Kenko ?

Hope you can help !

Nikovich,
Depends on the camera whether it will work or not. It will work on the 20D and 30D IF you tape the correct pins and have decent light. I've heard it searches on the 350 and 400 with the pins taped. On the 5D I'm pretty sure it should work without the tape. There are a number of threads in the forum on the pin taping technique - I have a link at home but am traveling now. Search through the forums for 1.4 tele and your camera and see what comes up.

Have a look at:- http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=29503

and also the thread on BF called Tele Convertor for 30D - best one? What is "taping pins?" NEWBIE ALERT
Both should help.

Good luck

Thanks alot guys , I did try taping the 3 bottom pins yesterday and had the same result . (Err 01) message... perhaps I need to re-evaluate and make sure I taped the right ones :-) Could it even be that I was in low light ..?

Back to basics. Does the camera work without a hitch with just the lens? Attach the TC and try it again but on MF first. AF is all about how much light the sensor is receiving, I found that in good light my 300D worked on AF with my 1.4 TC attached to my Canon 75-300 zoom lens and worked also with my son's Canon 70-300 IS zoom. In poor light it would hune but worked fine on MF. Perhaps you have a faulty TC, have you checked that out? Do you know anybody else with a Canon DSLR for them to check the TC out?

On the 5D I'm pretty sure it should work without the tape.
It will still need taping on the 5D to achieve AF (it is only the 1 series that will AF at f8).
