I know there is a thread going but I'm like a kid with a new toy. First of all thanks to Keith & Postcard (and many others) for their patience and direction. Today the weather here was quite overcaste-was I down-hearted ? You'd better believe it!! Undaunted I opened the box, fixed the lense to my Kenco 1.4 and 30D (instructions-what instructions?) then waited in the conservatory.
I had to take them all at 300th/400th f8 and hand held and of course the af doesn't work but I can see the potential already.
I will tape the pins as soon as I can be absolutely certain which tape to use (what did you use Keith?) and try it out again Saturday.
I would appreciate any comments (but only nice ones)
Dave
If I could work out how to add a smily I would-can anyone advise?

Not sure what the 'jammy devil' refers to but thanks for the nice response. Often thought about the TT's and drove round the course last year but never actually went to see them.

Very nice shots Dave, much better than I can manage manually focusing. I don't get on well with the tc on this lens, but the lens itself is excellent. I look forward to seeing loads more excellent shots.

Graham, not channel 4 ,but ITV 4.It is a freeview/sky channel.Sadly a rider died today plus 2 onlookers.Perhaps that is why no racing was shown this evening.

Ahhhhhhhh Mad Sunday that brings back memories 8-) i never missed a TT for approx 15 years until i moved up here, but health problems put an end to my biking 8-( still i managed to have 43 bikes in 20 years and 10 years of Drag bikes (if you get a chance of a go on a Hayabusa + Nitro then go for it! it was my last drag bike and just thinking of it makes my legs go like jelly ahhhhhhhh them were the days)
Jammy devil , Jammy Bugger all mean the same thing your one lucky guy and when you get bored with it you can donate it to my charity LoL
Have fun
Brian
Ps Terrible news about the TT crashes, i was only saying to the wife that they had done pretty well this year.Like yourself i have ridden the TT course many times and at normal speeds its quite a challenge but 200mph phew! (my Hayabusa managed 208mph once on the strip at Santa Pod but no lamp posts or bends there!)

Hi Dave,

those pictures are looking good, and - I guarantee - things will get even better as you continue to use the lens.

The pin taping trick is very well illustrated here: http://www.michaelfurtman.com/taping_the_pins.htm

Thanks Keith
I did the pin taping and it works fine-hardly any loss of af speed. Took this with the TC on af today.

David, What tape did you use? Would insulating tape or Scotch tape do?

thanks

Both are fine, Jamie - I'd use a low tack (ie not too sticky) tape just to avoid leaving any adhesive behind, but most tapes are OK.

The pins in question retract into the body of the TC when the tape is in place - all we're doing is providing something to press the pins in, and anything will do, within reason.

I use insulating tape, incidentally.

I looked at several types and went for the tape that is sold for use on tent poles- you now on the internal poles so you can identify which end goes where. I found this to be the least 'tacky'. It is surprising how small a piece is required and it is much easier if you use tweezers. Hope this helps.

Maybe that is my problem. I've been using tape and it works ok. Question is does your tape hold the pins down WHEN you put it on, or just not let them make contact with the pin on the lens? Mine aren't actually held down, just has the tape over them. Do I need to do it differently so they are held down?

Lisa, all you need do is cover the pins so they will not make a direct contact with the mating pins on the lens.

Hmmn...It took me quite a while to get the tape on due to the depth and narrow space to access the pins...on now though and AF working pretty well.

I think like Keith I'll leave the 1.4x on all the time in case I have to keep doing this fiddly job again ;)

Thanks Roy, that's what I thought. I've done that, it still seems to search a little in what I would call good light - still I like the extra reach.

Lisa, it will still hunt a bit at times but that is nothing to do with the way you have taped the pins. Even with good light I find it hunts when there is not to much contrast between say the bird and it surroundings - in this case I use the full time manual focus to give it a helping hand, if you turn the focus wheel slowly when you are nearly in-focus, AF will lock-on most times.

I must also pitch in and say a big thanks to Keith , Nigel and many other great folk here for inspiring me to get this beautiful lens for my 350D

Here is an American Redstart that wanted a bath but kind of just sat there for 2 seconds while she thought about it.
That was all the time I needed :-)

Hope you have as much pleasure from it as I have from mine. Still learning and think I will be for a long time yet.
