Driving between 2 villages up by the dark Peak this morning I saw 2 pairs of lapwing, clearly agitated, calling and almost hovering by the roadside. I thought at first there must be a cat or similar near a chick, but could see nothing. Drove round the corner, and found the problem - a little owl. This was perched on a fence post, and allowed a slow approach in the car until I was directly opposite it across the lane. Fantastic views of both species, but no camera! Still, it provided a pleasant interlude in the daily grind.
