View Full Version : Bird Points Game Yearlist 07 Version!
The Devil Bird
Saturday 16th June 2007, 23:48
Hello there everyone!
Seeing the success of the original 'Bird Points Game', I have decided to create a new version- and I am proud to announce the 2007 yearlist version. This version is fully revised and all the errors made in the first game have been corrected.
This game will start on Wednesday 20th June 07. To reduce the number of late starters (If you do start late on this one then don't worry you can still play) can you please PM me in advance to let me know that you might play or just remember its starting on Wednesday.
Here are the rules:
It basically works like this:
On each bird, at the end there is a number. This is the amount of points it is worth (rarer the bird the more points). For each bird on your life list you add the number you see at the end up to make your total.
For example here would be the first section of the game (don't start playing it from this):
Mute Swan Cygnus olor AC2 10p
Tundra Swan Cygnus columbianus A 30p
Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus A 25p
Bean Goose Anser fabalis A 30p
Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus A 25p
Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons A 20p
Lesser White-fronted Goose* Anser erythropus A 35p
Greylag Goose Anser anser AC2C4 15p
Snow Goose Anser caerulescens AC2 35p
Greater Canada Goose Branta canadensis C1 10p
Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis AC2 25p
Brent Goose Branta bernicla A 25p
Red-breasted Goose* Branta ruficollis A 60pFor example I have seen from that; Mute, Tundra and Whooper Swans, Pink-footed, Great White-fronted, Greylag, Greater Canada, Barnacle and Brent Geese. So I add the points next to those birds up to give me a total of 180 points- in the full thing I would do the whole British List.
Here is the pointing system:
10p= Really common
15p=Common
20p=Fairly Common
25p=Uncommon
30p=Localized
35p=Scarce
40p=Minor Raritee
50p=Vagrant
60p=Smaller National Raritee
70p=National Raritee
80p=Mega
90p=Super Mega (only recorded two to 20 times in Britain before)
100p=First for Britain
The game is posted in sections- there are ten of these, each consisting of 60 birds.
If you see a new bird for the year (which is very likely seeing that it is only half way throught the year) then let me know and I will add the points for you.Any questions please ask me. The first part will be posted on Wednesday 20th June 07.
Thanks,
David

And a very important part I forgot to mention.
There are three categories you can enter in : Category A (Points based on the birds you have seen in Britain, excluding the Republic of Ireland)
Category B (Points based on birds you have seen in Republic of Ireland only)
Category C (Points based on birds seen in a different couintry but are on the British List, points are likely to be biased however it will be interesting to see how it turns out and it lets other people have a go)
Thanks,
TDB

Hmmmm I like the sound of category C. Almost all of the birds I've seen this year are 60-100s on the other Bird Points Game. Yes, this does sound fun!

Ok he score board will be on in a sec. On-firecrest, they are updated (eg some of the birds I have changed by 5 or 10 points because I thought it would be more suitable.
BC Birder It is possible but if you are surprised are you sure you did it for your year list?
IMPORTANT EDIT: Just noticed that I didn't change the rules it is meant to say for each bird on your year list not life list, it won't let me change it so keep it in mind.

Thanks for chANging that, thats were I got confused. Ok then, if I discount the two birds that I have on my life list, but haven't seen this year, my final total is 965. So you can just knock of that 50 points from the scoreboard. Yay, still in first place lol.

Ah, well. Before I do the scores-welcome to the game new players. The Green Heron IS meant to be 90, now it is 90 on my updated revised version on Word but whenever I try to copy and paste that onto here it comes out wierd so I had to copy and paste from the life list version.
Dan it said life list on the first post, I meant year list but I cant edit it for some reason so I cant do anything about it.
Yes you can only count birds this year on this game (see bird points game thread for life list version)
How did you add up the total Dan, did you use a scientific calculator?
I shouldn't have missed Lesser Canada Goose- I copied and pasted the list of the BOURC site and then added my points.
Let me sort this out...

Ahh, may be that they haven't 'officially' split LCG yet, so don't worry about that. To add them up I just stuck them in to a calculator, that shouldn't have had any effect on the outcome? See what you get anyway! Will add up my yearlist totals some point soon, not quite got time at the mo.

Can someone really nice do a favour for me! It would make this game far more easy.
Here it is:
Anyone with Word 2003 who can for the next few weeks post a part every 2 days, I would send them the revised file (so there would be no mistakes) and they would be so kind as to just copy and paste a page onto birdforum every other day?
If anyone could do it it would be so appreciated because- having word 2007 I can't copy and paste it onto this without all the font details and HTML coming up so anyone with Word 2003, could someone please just recieve the file and when I ask them to- copy and past onto here, it would only take a couple of seconds and would reduce any confusion (ie the green Heron)
But I am looking for someone who would be able do do it every couple of days.
Thanks!

Any chance I can join? I went back and added up my score I didn't cheat I promise (unless you count poor math) o:D I'm of course in category "C" and I have 6100 points so far this year. Like BF I did well with all the warblers.
Edit: someone with more time than me should do this for the ABA. It would be fairly easy because the ABA checklist already gives birds codes.

I was thinking of doing that myself, but you'd need to adjust the codes. Remember in fair England, they have a fairly limited area, so if anything pops up anywhere it's plain rare for England. But in the ABA area it's much more common to have east-west or north south strays, i.e. Cattle Egrets are so common that they can be seen by flying over Florida, but one in Washington state will cause a commotion. Or maybe you wouldn't need to adjust, they just average it out in the codes.
If you mind, David, tell me.

When this one is finished I am afraid we will have to wait until 2008 for the next game, by then I will have created a word 07 compatable version so Claire won't have to do it. but of course if you see any new 07 birds then please add them to the scores.

Yeah the winds favor you. Especially for something like the little Robin, I doubt they could get through the headwinds to here. Your nice waterfowl, shorebirds and gulls don't have much of a problem though! We've got a Curlew Sandpiper at good ol' Jamaica Bay right now, right outside of New York city.

I am jealous of your Whinchat Claire, I STILL need one of them, just like I STILL need Woodlark and Tree Pipit.
Got two of them down at Minsmere on Friday. Great little birds! I wouldn't be too jealous as I bet you've got more on your 2007 list than I've got on my life list!!! Although it is growing at a steady rate as I hnow have more time now my course has finished!
Looking forward to hunting down some of the winter visitors in the coming months!
Hope you had a nice holiday!
Kind regards

Right, now, I have come to this decision about the Gulls:
Caspian Gull: 30 points
American Herring Gull: 60 points
Hotspur
Wednesday 10th October 2007, 21:25
Do i get 100 for Brown Flycatcher?
If so im on 4135 now
Seems low for Caspian Gull with 15 -20 records a year compared to the 500 or so YBW which scores 40 (have seen 10 or so in a fortnight)

Well, I will reconsider the points sometime. I will put you down as 4135, dont know if this is including the Brown Fly. Well done.
