Dear Forum,
new to this group. Some 25 years ago, I got into the seventh heaven with the Golden guide to the Birds of NAmerica. It had sonograms, which I have been missing since - well I still have the books.

Recently, I got a Sennheiser MKE and a Sony Minidisk MZ-RH1, which is able to record in PCM format and down load to a PC (USB 1.1!) - so its fully digital. Almost everything is going well. Now I have my first full set of recordings - a few dozen test ones. There is only one small nagging thing.

On the MD every file is given a group (kind of directory) and a number. Also the recording or write out times are recorded - at least they show up on the Sony. Then using sonicstage I start transferring my files to the PC. Now all the files have names like unknown, unknown01 - not even "group numbers" are shown. After the transfer, the files on my pc are named date-time of the moment they were written on my PC (not recorded!). The copying of the files takes place apparently in the order they are on disk, so all the 50 files end up in a completely messed up chaotic order.

Is there any way to copy the files in an orderly fashion?

Well, I could always start the file with spoken info, which would solve it, but it needs immediate attention after download. Alternatively, I could sort all the files on the MD and in the temporary album using the only information I get from the MD files on sonic stage which is the length of the recording. I could then update all the file names on the album manually. A notebook in the field could also be helpful, but I would prefer this to be as automatic as possible.

I welcome any suggestions.

regards
Harry

You should not create groups on the HiMD itself to move files into, as there is some anecdotal evidence that editing on the disc reduces the reliability of transfer using SS.

However, you can rename the files on the MD using sonicstage - I generally preview the files on the HiMD using SS before transfer. I rename the files I want to transfer as YYMMDD_HH-MM_BTOcode_location_mike. I then transfer these as a group - unfortunately the track number gets prepended. It makes it easier if you transfer group by group, moving each group after transfer to its own directory, or using Tools -> Options -> Transfer settings -> (HiMD) -> Transfer settings -> Advanced select a different destinaction directory for each group.

I have neve found out how to preserve the file time/date of recording in SS, and I'd love to know how...
