I think I can do all of them except for 13 and 18. I have an idea on 13 but having consulted a map (and leaving aside that there are two villages with Walsingham in their name in Norfolk) I'm thinking that the directions in the clue are a little wayward. 'Great' quiz indeed though.

Elizabeth the (second) pedant here. I now have time to sit down and look at this properly - Question 20 - his reign started in 871 (though he was born around 849).

No, the question says he was king during those years - he was the favourite son of another king, therefore presumably a prince - but he could not have been king until the old man snuffed it.

It does not say he was King for those dates, he says very pedantically ( I will grant you that is how I would read it though!!).

Oh tea break Elizabeth

Christine - I thought Great crested grebe for 11. I was still hanging back on posting any answers, although I THOUGHT I had only one missing. Perhaps it would be an idea to post a specific deadline (GMT) for first posting.

I'm hoping to attach a pictorial answer to number 8, my son was there only a few days ago, and emailed me this picture - unfortunately it was raining a the time.

Pete - I was ages getting to sleep last night (I'd been to a committee meeeting), so I was listeneing to some music on the radio. Suddenly the words "Dunmow Flitch" came into my mind - I hadn't been thinking about your quiz at all, but I just wondered if it might be the answer to qu.18, because I really have no idea why it should come into my head like that. I nearly came down to look in an encyclpoedia or switch on my computer to check.

This morning I looked in Encarta (before I looked at BF) - and there was the answer. Spooky? Am I psychic - or perhaps I am a witch after all?

Normally when Women think about me they fall asleep!!

Interestingly Great Dunmow is technically incorrect I think!! The Flitch was awarded by Dunmow Abbey. What remains of the Abbey (the Lady Chapel and its worth a visit) is the parish church of the village of Little Dunmow.

Pete - hope you didn't read my earlier message, which has been deleted - I was still half asleep when I wrote it!!

Thanks for the tip - next time I can't get to sleep, I'll think of you.
