Hi Folks

Been away for a while but had a 10 day programme of ringing down here from 3rd to the 10th Oct. with 2 other trainers so impossible think of anything else other than ringing.

Weather has been very mixed ,plenty of rain but also some clear very warm days but winds mostly from the East.

Our first evening, calm, clear and warm, involved putting upthe nets at oneof my sites in Guadalmansa valley in prep fornext morning but we trapped a few birds before dusk incl.-

1 GREEN SANDPIPER
1 ROBIN
1 CHIFFCHAFF
1 WILLOW WARBLER

plus retrapped

1 CHIFFCHAFF

The Green Sand.was a ringing tick for1 of the guys so we got off on a good footing!!!

The forecast forthe next morning was not good but we got nets open before first light and it was already spitting with rainbut with all 3 of us patrolling the nets regularly it was not nec.to close at all during the session,so we got lucky.

The weather dettered much bird movement but the session was quite fruitful incl.

3 BLACKBIRDS
6 BLACKCAPS
2 PIED FLYCATCHERS
1 SARDINIAN WARBLERS
1 GREY WAGTAIL
1 SHORT TOED TREECREEPER

Quite a number of retraps today

2 CETTIS WARBLERS
1 ROBIN
2 BLACKCAPS
1 SHORT TOED TREECREEPER
1 SARDINIAN WARBLER
1 GREAT TIT

The majority of Blackcaps are now N.Migrants.

The next day,5thOct.saw us a little further up the valley at a new site for the Ringers.

We were there again inthe dark but the rain was too heavy to comtemplate putting up any nets so had to wait till first light when it eased off and gradually improved as the day went on.

Despite the late start bird numbers were up today

2 PIED FLYCATCHERS
1 WREN
11 BLACKCAPS
2 BLACKBIRDS
1 LONG TAILED TIT
1 CHAFFINCH
1 GREAT TIT
1 DARTFORD WARBLER
1 SHORT TOED TREECREEPER
1 GARDEN WARBLER
1 SARDINIAN WARBLER

Retraps incl.

5 ROBINS
1 GREAT TIT
4 BLACKBIRDS
2 SARDINIAN WARBLERS
2 LONG TAILED TITS
2 BLACKCAPS

The majority of birds caught today were resident species even the Blackcaps. The most interesting bird was the dartford Warbler,a 1st winter male only the 2nd.that I had ringed down here.It was obviously undergoing juv.dispersal as the valley sides are covered in typical breeding habitat for this species, much gorse and other thorny scrub.

You've really got me thinking now. We saw quite a few different Warblers in Majorca, but my ID skills weren't up to identifying them. Plenty of Sardinian Warblers, Blackcaps, Fan-tailed and what I put down as Balearic Warblers.

Looks like you have had a pretty good week all told.
