View Full Version : They took my daylight away!

I used to think daylight savings silly, but I really could use that evening light. My wife said to walk around the neighborhood with my son who is selling Christmas wreths for boy scouts. But it got dark! Did manage to see one white throated sparrow. See them once a week or so.

October and spring are much better for after work walks, Nov I just walk on weekends.

I go to work 5:40, so no time for birding AM.

I'm lamenting the passing of day light savings as well. Go to work in the dark, come home in the dark. I am fortunate to be able to do a bit of birding during the lunch hour though. This time of year I really live for the weekends.

I don't know, you people at what, 35° North (?), complaining about winter darkness!

Seriously, I know how you feel. It's always sad when it's too dark to go birding after work. It's weekends for me only now too.

Greetings from 64°N

Hi Edward,

What time are sunrise & sunset in late December for you?

08.30 and 15.30 for me.

Hi Michael,

the big difference here is that the mornings are much darker than in the UK, the evenings are similar,
so sunrise in late December is c. 1140 and sunset c.1520.
I'd like to see what Gaukur says about winter daylight where he lives as he's north of 66°N!

Hi Edward,

Thanks; so that's 3h40m daylight, with 90 mins 'daylight saving' built in (i.e., noon is at 13.30 your local time, not 12.00)

I think that's it Michael. I once had it explained to me that Iceland should be a further time zone west but that it would be too inconvenient in terms of dealing with the rest of Europe. I think that there is only one village, Ittoqqortoormiit, in eastern Greenland, in this next time zone anywhere in the world. Could be wrong though....

Hi Edward,

Nearly; as well as eastern Greenland, the Azores are also on GMT-1

Pitch black when I leave home pitch black when I return. Only good thing is I work at a desk in the window on the third floor overlooking the airfield. So I can watch the Lapwing flocks moving around hastened by the bird scarer. A few weeks ago the windows were darkened by flocks of Swallows on a feeding frenzy eating all the insects under the eaves, prior to departing on their journey South. The art of flying in close proximity was better than the Red Arrows, changes of direction taken in split seconds.

Edward, I see I have no complaints. I'll just skip my shower and leave to work 6:25, should give me a 10-15 min walk in the morning.
