4 Swallows seen flying over the north coast of Scotland 7/11/03 (Caithness), if they don't get a move on soon they'll be late for the Autumn migration!

Funnily enough, I've seen quite a lot of late Swallows (and other late migrants) here in the east of Scotland (more than I've ever seen in England). Three years ago there were two Swallows in St Andrews until the end of November with one staying well into December (I think till Christmas). I've had a few other Swallows in the middle of November. It can often stay quite warm up here in the early part of the winter, particularly when the wind is from the south. Last week it was almost T-shirt weather!

Red-headed Woodpeckers always migrate by mid-October around here, and Sunday we saw lots when birding about 125 miles west of us. So much fun to watch, too -- chasing off everything in sight, even Blue Jays!

Just shows you, tho, that birds just don't read the field guides, and will go only when they're darned good and ready.
