View Full Version : Loss of pixels

I plan to buy a Nikon Coolpix P5100 and to use this camera for digiscoping. I phoned two stores in my neighbourhood with the question what these devices would cost. The prices the salesmen mentioned were 349 and 419 euro's respectively. When I told the second salesman the first price I heard, he had to laugh, these prices were impossible. I told him where to find the other store and mentioned the camera they sold was a Dutch version as well (other versions may bring along problems with the guarantee). He then began a story on loss of pixels. He sometimes encountered unacceptable loss of pixels, after which he would return the camera to the manufacturer. The manufacturer will then sell these camera's for a discount to other vendors such as the store I mentioned. What he meant was that if I wanted a quality camera, I should buy from him and not from his competitor.

What I wonder, is this a plausible story? Is there really a large difference in quality between camera's of the same brand?

Sounds totally bogus to me. Consider the source - he wants your business and he hates his competitors. There may be some small differences between samples of a particular camera model, but I believe it is random. A manufacturer is unlikely to jeopardize its reputation by distributing damaged goods, I think.

Yes,
I Totally agree with that.

Definately, variations in quality, here and there,

All Digital Cameras, experience loss of pixels,to some degree.

Most Compensate,for it,
