I don't know if there's a better way but I normally click on another innocuous tool such as the Hand or Move tool. I don't know if it is possible to deselect all tools after using one. I'm sure somebody else will have the answer, though.

I might have misunderstood the original question. Ctrl+D will clear the selection from an image but I thought the OP wanted to know how to stop any tool remaining selected in the toolbox after it has been used. I'm probably wrong though.

If I choose the lasso tool and draw a selection the pointer remains as the lasso tool until I choose a different tool. Is that what you mean? If I press the shift lock key the pointer changes from the lasso symbol to a simple cross hair although the lasso tool is still selected.

Hi JohnH,
Have you got Caps Lock on, this will give you a cross-hair cursor instead of the usual one that goes with the tool selected.

Select the black arrow (Path selection tool). This will give you a regular mouse pointer that does nothing but selection from the menus.
