My wife and I are currently in Southwest Florida (Fort Myers Beach area) on a bird photography holiday and were thinking of a cross-state trek to check out the Viera Wetlands.
I'd appreciate it if anyone familiar with the area could let us know what the birding is like there currently.

Cheers,
Jim

From one of the local 'listservs' this report (extract)was submitted yesterday;

Birds at Viera today included 2 Greater Scaup among the 30+ Lesser Scaups, about 50 Hooded Mergansers, 3 each of Ruddy Duck and Ring-necked Duck, and a handful of Northern Shovelers with the usual Blue-winged Teal and Mottled Duck crowd. A Northern Harrier, 2 Bald Eagles and 2 Red-tailed Hawks were seen.
And two Egyptian Geese.

Hope this helps.

Great Place
Stay in your car and you can get fairly close to the animals.
I go there a lot and see eagles, caracaras, hawks, harriers, limpkins, egrets, herons, gators, turtles, snakes, and lots of ducks.
I'm going tommorrow and I'll tell you how it goes.
Good Luck :)

Alex

Thanks Alex ... I look forward to your report. It was the caracaras and eagles that we were mostly interested in.

Cheers,
jim
