Timing an autumn trip to N Greece (1 Viewer)

Brian Stone

A Stone chatting
I'm contemplating a short visit to areas north of Thessaloniki this autumn and want to get the timing right. It would be nice to still be able to catch things like Levant Sparrowhawk leaving but don't want to be too early and miss arriving wintering birds. When do Spotted Eagles start turning up and are the Pelicans and Pygmy Cormorants around in the autumn?

Hello Brian.

Unfortunately the Eagles are in general late arrivals (late October, most arriving November. Of course you'll always get some early birds, but you have to be lucky...). So most of the migrating raptors will have left.

As for Pelicans, yes Dalmatians are guaranteed and they usualy have a few White with thems. You can get 100ds of Pygmies at lake Kerkini, people often report them being more numerous then the Great Cormorants. Dalmatians and other goodies are also near guaranteed.

Have fun

Dimitris
