Vasse Estuary (WA) (1 Viewer)

I will be staying in Busselton, West Australia, for a couple of days later in the year. I notice that it is close to the Vasse Estuary. Is that any good for birds? What birds should I look out for there?

Yes, it's a decent birding spot, although I haven't been there for a few years now. There is a parking area with a track to a bird hide - I think it's almost opposite Wonnerup House. This is good for waterbirds (e.g. Great & Little egrets, Black Swan, Yellow-billed Spoonbill) although I've never seen many waders there. I used to see good numbers of waders (e.g. Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Pacific Golden Plover, Banded Stilt, Red-necked Avocet) at another spot - I'll try and dig up directions - but there was a fair bit of development going on nearby and I'm not sure if it's still good.

I'm sure there are plenty of other spots to check. You might find more info in the Birds WA bird guide for Busselton - see http://www.birdsaustralia.com.au/the-organisation/wa-bird-guides.html

The great thing about the area is you've got everything from coastal to big, ancient forest.

If you have the time, pop down to Margaret River - http://www.eaglesheritage.com.au/

Thanks for the idea. I will not have my own transport so will stay around the Busselton area and have now booked whale watching trips from Dunsborough. I have a few days in Perth, as well, my third visit to the city, and will check out some sites there.
