FZ38 £199 at Dixons (1 Viewer)

Its that x's and mm question again.

It says 18x. And they say 483mm, with IS.
I was considering either a canon 400 mm or a sigma 50-500 with IS (both of which are >£1000.0)

Is this camera really any good? Seems too good to be true.

Jaysan, this is a superzoom which is a completely different kettle of fish compared to a SLR. The sensor is tiny which makes it noisy especially at higher iso. Also, 483 is not the true optical length of the lens, 483mm is the 35mm equivalent. Depending on which camera house you would pair the lenses you mention with, the 35mm equivalent might need to be adjusted with the crop factor of often 1.6x to get the equivalent angle of view, so the 400mm might feel like a 640.

Having said all of that, the FZ38 is certainly a capable camera within its limitations, and it could easily be a camera for the days you don't care to bring the big setup. I have the older FZ18, and if the bird is close, you can get results such as this or this. The newer FZ38 has more pixels and a better low light performance compared to my camera.

Yes its very good

Obviously besides being lighter and cheaper, it won't be as good as a set-up costing over £1,000, but if you're happy with the limitations of a superzoom compared to a DSLR then you can't go wrong with this one.

Agree with Amarillo, this is a very good and highly rated bridge camera, and especially good value at this price. Just don't assume it will perform as well as a £1,000 DSLR.

It's gone up twenty quid now - I think some people over at DPreview (where I also posted the info) have put in orders!

Still a bargain though...
