Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary (1 Viewer)

I don't see much information on the web about Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary near Lucknow. For a place like it to exist here should be considered a miracle because growing population and pollution has threatened life for almost all wild animals.

Nawabganj is mostly a small shallow lake surrounded by a fence. I've visited it a few times and took many pictures but only recently (end of January) did I get to see some serious bird action. Most birds here are winter visitors who arrive during November and leave by February.

The sanctuary is a government run enterprise and I was surprised at how seriously the staff take their job. Before you buy a ticket (30 rupees per person), you have to provide your full name, address, date of birth, and father's name. If you provide (and deposit) proper identification, the staff will lend you a 8x40 pair of binoculars which is really cool.

Immediately before you enter the trail around the lake, you see a sign board containing names of all birds that are found here:

Around the lake there are some watch towers which also have signs for birds to look out for

from these pictures, it'd seem that we saw more signs than birds themselves, but its only because my camera was better suited to take pictures of stationary signs (nearby and we could walk up to them without them flying away ;))

I'll get to the birds soon...

some cranes. In the background you could see a watchtower. Most of these watchtowers are occupied not by birdwatchers but by romantic couples who want to be left alone! Privacy in Indian parks is quite rare so those who can take advantage of it, do so...

then there is this curious bird, fairly large. From a distance it appeared larger than a crow or a Kite.

Edit: Found some more pics on my hdd from a previous visit....posting them all here....if you want to some up close I can provide a larger version of all.

Lets start with this. On the way to the sanctuary we witnessed an accident. People in India however turn a blind eye and the police has no business helping out in such circumstances. If you are thinking of driving in India...my advice is "don't!"

now this bird...might be an eagle and it occupied the same spot as the "curious bird" mentioned a few posts above. Any ideas?
