To start the ball rolling in this forum the first thing to try for improving your ability to get close to the subject is dressing in the drabbest clothes possible, blending in with the surroundings is paramount. I use the 'Realtree' range of hunting gear it is fantastic, I'm sure you will have seen Simon King on the T.V. using it on 'Big cat diary', you need to find a gun shop, or look in the shooting mags in W H Smiths, or check out Kevin Keatly wildlife watching supplies http://www.wildlifewatchingsupplies.co.uk/

Thanks for posting this Nigel, I have been looking around for 'realtree' products without much luck, at least in the UK.

I'm with Nigel,

sorry Dylan, this stuff is completely unlike standard NATO combat dress, all the patterns I have seen are actually quite attractive and for the most part, if you have the patience to sit or stand still and allow for the wind.

I use Bill Jordan's Advantage Timber as its a good all year round camo pattern though I have been thinking about the wetlands pattern recently. Ok it's not cheap, but it is hell of a lot cheaper than good bins, 'scope and camera. The jacket and trousers I have are also well designed with lots of pockets and warm, windproof and waterproof.

oops done it again:

....if you have the patience to sit or stand still and allow for the wind, it can result in some really close encounters.

sorry,

Mike

I will post a picture in the gallery of a Spotted Flycatcher, I was in 'Realtree' cammo with a Realtree shroud over my 600mm lens which was mounted on a tripod, the bird sat on my lens frequently and I photographed it with a 100-400mm lens with a 25mm extension tube on set at about 220mm, it was less than 2 ft away, that what cammo can do for you!

Nigel

Nigel,
Do you happen to know if this 'Simon King' camouflage gear is sold at a shop in Holt, Norfolk. Country Sports is the name of the shop I believe although there seems to be several outdoor clothing shops in Holt. There seem to be very few suppliers of this one kind and I was thinking of dropping into Holt in a couple of weeks time while I am on the North Norfolk coast.

Colin

Sorry Colin I do not know if they do, why not try and phone them, the gunshop in Hunstanton, near Barclays bank has some though.
Just the chap in there suffers from force 9 halitosis. Ugh

Nigel,
Thanks for that which is even better as one of the B and B's I use is in Hunstanton so I will be able to walk to the shop and take a look.

Nigel

Thanks very much for starting this fascinating thread. I look forward to hearing more!

Try www.deben.com in Suffolk, they have all the latest patterns and garments from the states.... including bulk rolls of sheet material and mesh for hides. If anyone wants to go the whole hog... you can get your vehicle sprayed in it, Gungear in Ipswich can arrange that....go for it Nigel ;)

I've been using Realtree Xtra Brown since 97 and I can walk into a bank wearing it without the shutters flying down.... a lot of 'old dears' ask me if they can get curtains in it!

I used to have an orange dayglo Ford Escort which was run into several times when it was parked, so if I went and got my Fiesta fully camouflaged I dread to think what might happen. There would be the added problem of not being able to find it when I have parked it in some of the rural car parks.

Colin,
When you're 'down my way [with Franklyn Engelmann]', feel free to pop in for a cup of tea.

Tony

Thanks Tony. Not sure when I will be coming to Norfolk - it depends on work and the weather. I will let you know.

Hi all
You could also try fishing tackle shops for the real tree camouflage etc.I must admit that i prefer Dpm cammo(possibly for the price, some realtree etc outfits are between £200 and £300 to buy whereas i can completely outfit myself with genuine dpm kit for around £70).I find it comfortable and hard wearing and just as effective.
Happy Birding

I just feel the old dpm gives the wrong impression to some people and can be intimidating... most people don't relaise the modern friendly camo is camo at all. As you say, it can be quite pricey though.
I bought a realtree fleece bomber style jacket for £40 a few years ago, it was cheaper than most non camo fleeces at the time! Bit small and short for me know..may bring it to Slimbridge if anyone is interested? think its Large size.
Andy (too many sweeties over xmas)
