Here we go again with another year list. Since I'm not expecting as much travel this year as the last couple the total may be a little down but we'll have to see what comes up.

For comparison purposes I'll update this post with the number of species seen by country.

With various recent reports of lots of good birds being easier than normal to find with the breeding season for most residents in full swing I did a quick day trip to Panti. Alas the weather didn't cooperate and after a pre-dawn start from SG it was raining on arrival, varying from heavy to light frequently but didn't stop till after 4pm - the result was a long slow day in a dark forest but Panti being Panti and this my first visit for 2012 plenty of year birds.

Just how slow it was highlighted by the Blyth's Hawk Eagle below being shot just before the rain eventually finished - so the majority of the birds below came in the last hour and half.

We arrived in Bangkok on a three night visit with the goal of seeing a Spoon-billed Sandpiper - anything else just expected to be additions to my year list and other lifers just a bonus!

Having finally cleared immigration around lunch time (it took just over 1 hour to get through the immigration line) and collecting a hire car we headed towards the coast with the first year birds appearing before leaving Bangkok.

With a late afternoon flight back to Singapore we spent the day enjoying the scenery of inland Petchaburi and knowing we didn't have time to enter Kaeng Krachan National Park we still ended up at the visitor centre - something I was happy to have done with a big fruiting tree in the carpark which accounted for almost all of the birds below.

A very pre-dawn start for one of the few days of this trip primarily dedicated to birding. In this case the two species endemic to Cebu - whilst Black Shama was fairly easy, the near extinct Cebu Flowerpecker was of course not seen.

An enjoyable morning back at Rajah Sikatuna highlighted by a pair of Azure-breasted Pittas (photo below) which were both not only visible but sat in the open for some time. The largest (pretty much only) mixed species flock of the trip moving through the forest also added quite a few new species.

I visited several places in Kranji today including Sungei Buloh, however all new year birds came in the grassland/farming areas of the Kranji countryside. The surprise for me was a colony of the introduced Golden-backed Weaver's with nests in several trees - I wasn't aware they were in this area with the stronghold around Lorong Halus.

Whilst reasonably expectant of the Scops Owl very surprised to get the Frogmouth at the first attempt. A speculative playing of the call had a frogmouth fly and perch less than 5m away at head height - after about 30 sec it flew off not to be seen again.
