What is the general view of the quality of this lens and for quick shots in practice does it work instead of using the scope?

Hi Keith,
Yep, it works well. It's the best quality add-on lens that I've used other than the Nikon tc3-ed. Remember that 5x still isn't a lot of magnification so you will need to get fairly close to smaller birds. It does let in a lot of light.

It's inexpensive and light-weighted, but it looses resolution at the edges and shows some CA. I had it and didn't like it.
