Waders Isle of Sheppey October (1 Viewer)

Last weekend I had a fantastic day on the Isle of Sheppey. Having planned a walk from Leysdown to Shellness and perhaps further I only got about 100 yards down the sea wall and ended up spending the next four hours hanging out with a group of very relaxed turnstone and grey plover that didn't even bother when the dog walkers went by!

So, my question is does anyone have local knowledge of the area? Are there any specific spots along the beaches and mudflats where other waders might be found? I'd like to go back again this weekend for some different wader socialising! Also, does anyone know much about the raptor watchpoint in Harty marshes - is it worth a long stint there?

Many thanks in advance, George

Your route choice is inspired George. If you had continued to Shellness (the block house) and round to the bay beyond timing your visit to arrive at the bay an hour before high tide you will pass several roosts and should get a full house of Sheppey waders.

The raptor watch point is great in winter but most visitors are not in yet - end November would be more rewarding. Wrap up very warm - it's mighty exposed and you will need a scope.

I'm not after those kinds of birds Phil!!

Thanks very much for the info Tortoise, much appreciated. Tides not great timing but I shall be there!

Thanks again George

Yep, still there Phil. Not sure if it's official and beach is perhaps an exaggeration but it obviously fulfills a need.

Sadly I didn't make it to the beach this Saturday as my neck/back had other more pressing ideas. Presume the general area of beach/mudflats keep getting better and better as we head into winter so hopefully I'll be back and make sure I choose a cold windy day so as to avoid any long lens/ naked people misunderstandings!
