EU defends capercaillie habitat...........
The Scottish Executive may face legal action for failing to protect capercaillies, one of Britain’s most endangered birds. European Commission officials have ordered a review of a successful Eagle Star planning application in Inverness-shire for 40 homes at Nethy Bridge on an site bordering a special protection area. Ministers may be told to revoke the permission. Refusal to do so could bring a hefty fine. George Kremlis, head of legal enforcement in the EC’s environment directorate, confirmed there are proceedings against the Executive. Stuart Housden, director of RSPB Scotland, said that the Executive “could face serious repercussions”, adding: “Highland Council must look at alternative locations for housing development. It must do more to protect the habitat.”

New bird haven proposed for Essex.............
Plans to create a coastal haven for many internationally important species of bird at Weymarks, near Bradwell-on-Sea, North Essex, are today published for public comment, by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), with the backing of Wildlife Minister Elliot Morley. If the proposed scheme were to go ahead, the existing sea wall at Weymarks would be carefully breached to allow the tides through.

Volunteers learn how to help save stranded whales........
Some 70 people had hands-on experience of dealing with beached whales during a demonstration by the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group in Ballybunion, Co Kerry over the weekend. The demonstration was at the request of the local sea and cliff rescue group following a mass stranding of 40 pilot whales at Aughacasla strand between Castlegregory and Tralee in March of last year. Dr Simon Berrow, chairman of the all-Ireland group, said live strandings of whales and dolphins were not more numerous but were more noticed and recorded. The demonstration included a simulated rescue of a rubber whale inflated with water and weighing two tonnes.
