I lived in NM for 6 years and I go back once in a while to bird. I must recommend a spot. Since you're coming from FL, if you're driving, it would not be out of the way to go to Rattlesnake Springs, which is part of Carlsbad Caverns NP (SE NM). This is a true "hotspot" in NM, since many species found only in Mexico have shown up there. See:
