anyone out there had their stikcky mits on the new gs feildscopes from opticron . i understand that their launching ed versons in the coming spring but i want one now! thinking of combining the 815 with a hdf zoom for mostly raptor veiwing arond my local patch. any alternative suggestions welcome , tempted as a am to take advantage of the deal combos on the nikon 111 from our lovely friends at warehouse express it only 60mm

The "basic" ES80 is just that - ordinary glass. You'd want the ES80 GA ED model.

Don't write off "small" scopes though, Rumblefish: there's a huge body of evidence on here and elsewhere that for all but a tiny percentage of the birding most of us do, a smaller scope is more than enough.

I'm speaking as a deliriously happy Zeiss 65 (+ zoom) owner - I got the whole bundle from WE for £600 and it is superb.

And - hand on heart - I just don't need a bigger scope. Maybe you don't either.
