Tuesday March 01, 2005:
"BIRD ALERT "
The Herring spawn has started---check out the water from Nanaimo to Courtney/Comox. Thousands upon thousands of seabirds and gulls can be seen from shore as the herring spawn moves along the Strait of Georgia in the next week or so.
A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was spotted coming to feeders across from Departure Bay in Nanaimo. This is the first reported sighting this year of a RUFUS HUMMINGBIRD in the Nanaimo area. Put your feeders up!

Monday February 28 :
There was a significant herring spawn between Columbia Beach and Parksville Bay.
The following birds were seen with the estimated numbers after.
BRANT GEESE: 500
GREATER SCAUP: 600
HARLEQUIN DUCK: 125
SURF SCOTER: 6700
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER: 700
BLACK SCOTER: 50
LONG-TAILED DUCK: 3000
BUFFLEHEAD: 300
COMMON GOLDENEYE: 400
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE: 125
along with about 26400 Gulls including GLAUCOUS-WINGED, MEW, THAYER'S, CALIFORNIA, HERRING, WESTERN BONAPARTE'S and two GLAUCOUS GULLS.
All birds are continually moving following the herring along the Strait.

Eighteen RED CROSSBILLS, many PINE SISKINS, RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS, and thirty two CALIFORNIA QUAIL are coming to feeders along Grafton Avenue in Errington.

Sunday February 27:
Over fifty PINE SISKINS are coming to feeders in the 1300 block of Ivor Road in Cedar.
A huge flock of PINE SISKINS are at the feeders behind the Backyard Wildbird Store in north Nanaimo.
HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen and photographed at Neck Point Park in Nanaimo.
Two BONAPART'S GULLS were spotted at Parksville Bay in Parksville,

The Backyard Wildbird and Nature Store presents Sunday morning bird walks. We meet at the store located at 6404 Metral Drive at 9:00 a.m. and go to a different birding location each week for about 2 or 3 hours. Everyone is welcome.

Friday February 25:
Over 100 ANCIENT MURRELETS were sighted off shore south of Parksville.

Thursday February 24:
A YELLOW-BILLED LOON was seen just off shore at the Englishman River Estuary in Parksville.

Wednesday February 23:
A SURFBIRD, BLACK-BELLED PLOVERS, KILLDEER, HERRING GULLS, CALIFORNIA GULLS and twenty BLACK TURNSTONES were seen at the mouth of the Englishman River in Parksville.

Tuesday February 22:
A BARRED OWL was spotted along Hirst Avenue in Parksville.

We are planning our fourth seabird boat tour with Beachcombers Excursions aboard the 41’ M.V. Terry Wayne on Saturday, March 19, 2005.
The plan is to leave Beachcomber Marina at 8:00 a.m. for eight to nine hours of birding on the Strait of Georgia to Thormanby Island and return to Beachcomber Marina at about 4:00 p.m. or so. The cost is $60.00 per person.
