end of October, I'll go to Haikou again. Even, last August I have been there and went to mangrove forest, near by. Just thousand of visitors, but no one bird.
Do somebody know, where I can go, for bird photography?

Thanks in advance

Lanhua

Hello Gretchen,

thanks a lot for your answer. I'm already in Haikou, which is located on the North coast of Hainan. Sanya is in the South, but this report can for sure help me, to identify, species in living in Haikou.
This afternoon I went, just to an park, which I know from my previous trips to Haikou. I was speachless to see so many diffrent species of the birds.
After returnig to Germany, I'll post some pictures.

Thanks again

Lanhua

Great to hear you found more birds this time. There are so many factors besides place. We'll look forward to hearing about and seeing what you birds find.

I'm, just afraid a very common bills, but it's first time for me to take pictures of birds in China, and I love it.
I've stayed in Shanghai for 5 years, but at this time my focus were on lanhua, now, lanhua and birds.

hi Lanhua,

Don't know much about Haikou, but I'm currently for a week at Leizhou where good migration is going on. Leizhou is located about 100 to 150 kms north of Haikou.
If you take a cab and go to some of the northern most place of the island in the early morning I'm sure you could get freshly arrived migrant, and then look for raptor on the day time.

All the best,

Jonatha

And you could consider Dongzhaigang "Mangrove Reserve", about 25km east of Haikou. Black-faced Spoonbill has been recorded there. I don't remember much from my only visit several years ago, except Black-shouldered Kites and Cinnamon* Bitterns.

* or "Chestnut Bittern" !

Jonatha,

the weekend was very bad. I think, also in Leizhou, just rain. This morning, the rain stoped and I went to the park, close to the see. It was great, a plenty of hoopoes (upupa epops) were there. Really a great weve.
I took a lot of pictures, even unfortunatelly, I didn't take with me my tele lens. Bad luck

all the best

Mietek

John, I went to the "Mangrove Reserve" in August, this year and I was very disapointed. An typical turist location, with houndrets of boots and thousends of noisy people.

best regards

Mietek

Mietek,

interesting to hear about your Hoopoes, I haven't seen a single one during my 2 weeks trip, maybe are they allready arrived there a long time ago. We've got really hugge amount of water at Leizhou during this week end, all the road looks like river, and a lot of birds were stucked at the tip of the peninsular, really incredible to see every field full of birds with hundreeds of Pipits mixed with lot of Snipe and Stint, despite the awfull weather it was really great birding....

Yonathan

yes, I was also surprised to see them in China. I know it from Germany, but didn't expected to see them in Haikou.
Over the week end the weather was really bad, but on Monday I have had 1 hour time and went to the park. In total on two days I've took pictures of, maybe , 12-13 species. I'll post the pictures tomorrow. Today just the Hoopoe.

Mietek

Hi Mietek,

Nice shot of the three Hoopoe's. When i went to Yancheng last winter, during the four hour drive, i saw more Hoopoe's than the magpies. I have hardly gone out of Shanghai for birding but i would expect to see a Hoopoe elsewhere in China.
Coming back to ID Section,

1. Oriental Magpie Robin (Male)
2. Red-billed Starling
3. Asian Brown Flycatcher
4. Sooty-headed Bulbul

2. Long-tailed Shrike
3. Red-billed Starling
4. Azure-winged Magpie

#16
1. Long-tailed Shrike
2. Chinese Bulbul
3. Red-billed Starling

The Red-billed Starling in Post #12 & 13 are the courtesy of local bird markets to sell them as exotics, tht's why the weird coloring.

I stayed for 5 years in Shanghai and know very well, that it's very hardly to go out of the city.
Thanks a lot for your ID, I'm just surprised about the colour variability of the red biller star.

Mietek

last December I've been again in Haikou. The weather was again very bad, grey in grey, no sunshine. So the picture are not so good. It's a place, close to the Haikou train station.
