I would be interested if anyone can suggest good late spring birding locations in the general area of Chiemsee / Berchtesgaden / Salzburg. A particular target of mine would be grey faced woodpecker so any good specific locations for that would be much appreciated.

I think Berchtesgaden National Park is a no-brainer here.

This site has valuable tips on how to spot the local "speciaties" there, unfortunately only in German (maybe Google Translate can provide a legible translation?).

The site lists the following species for Berchtesgaden NP:

Gänsegeier (Griffon Vulture; may possibly count as feral, see details),
Steinadler (Golden Eagle),
Wespenbussard (Honey Buzzard),
Wanderfalke (Peregrine),
Alpenschneehuhn (Ptarmigan),
Auerhuhn (Capercaille),
Birkhuhn (Black Grouse; apparently still lekking at this time of year),
Haselhuhn (Hazel Grouse),
Rauhfußkauz (Tengmalm's Owl),
Sperlingskauz (Pygmy Owl),
Schwarz-, Grün-, Grau-, Weißrücken- und Dreizehenspecht (Black, Green, Grey-headed, White-backed, and Three-toed Woodpeckers),
Felsenschwalbe (Crag Martin),
Bergpieper (Water Pipit),
Alpenbraunelle (Alpine Accentor),
Ringdrossel (Ring Ouzel),
Berglaubsänger (Bonelli's Warbler),
Zwergschnäpper (Red-breasted Flycatcher),
Wasseramsel (Dipper),
Mauerläufer (Wallcreeper; rare),
Tannenhäher (Nutcracker),
Kolkrabe (Raven),
Alpendohle (Alpine Chough),
Schneesperling (Snow Finch), and various others.

While the Berchtesgarden National Park is certainly a good suggestion for mountain birds, Grey-faced Woodpecker is a lowland bird. It's not a particularly sought after bird in Germany, so you probably won't find much info on specific sites.

Best you register to ornitho.de, and once in Bavaria, check recent sightings near the place you stay.

Fair enough. The area does hold a lot of species though that might be of interest to British birders, though. For Grey-headed Woodpeckers specifically, the area around the Chiemsee might be better. You'd have to look up the districts of Traunstein and Rosenheim in ornitho.de for that region.
