Spring has burst upon northern Indiana -- with temps reaching 65 (at least) for the first time this year.
As it was fairly clear and sunny, I just HAD to go out.
Went out into NE Allen County about 7:30 a.m., into Amish country, where the most obvious sign of spring was seeing an Amishman who has at least 25 martin houses in his farmyard ratcheting them up to the top of the poles.
Birds seen (* indicates first of the year):
Red-Winged Blackbird
Northern Cardinal
House Sparrows
Killdeer*
Starling
Horned Lark
Chipping Sparrow*
American Robin
Song Sparrow*
Rock Dove
Returned home late morning for a late breakfast and a quick couple of chores, then couldn't stand it any longer, and headed out again, this time to Huntington Reservoir (Roush Lake) and Salamonie Reservoir, both SW of Fort Wayne, in Huntington County.
Birds seen
Great Blue heron
Canada Goose
Hooded Merganser*
Downy Woodpecker
Blue Jay
Dark-Eyed Junco
White-Breasted Nuthatch
Mourning Dove
American Goldfinch
American Crow
Blue-Winged Teal*
Wood Duck*
American Kestrel
Red-Tailed DHawk
Carolina Chickadee
and the best bird of all, at 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon:
Barred Owl* -- perched in a tree alongside a county road.
Not a bad day overall -- and I get to top it off with the 2000 Van Cliburn gold medallist playing the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #3 with our orchestra. Her name is Olga Kern, a Russian, and she's reputed to set the stage on fire! The Rach 3 was also her final performance in the Van Cliburn competition. Should be a barn-burner!!
