Flower ID Please (1 Viewer)

Grateful if anyone can give me the ID of the yellow flower, found growing in Surrey yesterday.

I have also attached a picture of a Germander Speedwell that is growing in my garden. A whole patch of them have developed a 'hairy' head that feels quite solid, rather like a pod under the hairs. Again, any thoughts welcome.

Thanks,

Yaffle

Hi Yaffle.
The yellow-flowered plant is Marsh Yellow-cress (Rorippa palustris). (Formerly called Rorippa islandica, but that is now recognised as a separate, very similar but much rarer species that is most unlikely to turn up in Surrey.)

The growth deformation in Germander Speedwell is a gall, caused by fly larvae (Jaapiella veronicae). It is common and there is a description and colour illustration in the excellent 'British Plant Galls' by Redfern & Shirley (2002), published by the Field Studies Council, in the 'Aidgap' series. Highly recommended. (The book, not the gall.)
